Greetings!

2011 is in the history books. We are already a month into 2012...

  • Where are you headed?
  • Have you reflected on the past?
  • Have you assessed where you currently are?
  • Are you using the past year as a springboard to bigger and better things for the future?
  • What does this year hold in store for you and your organization?
  • How will you get there?

These are some of the questions we should be asking ourselves as we move into 2012. Personally and professionally, all of us want our lives to hold meaning. We want to have an impact on our families, our organizations and our community.

We want to hit the bullseye.

We want to have WALLOP!

But how can you hope to find WALLOP! if you're not aiming for the right target? How do you know your goals are on target? How can you be sure your aim is accurate?

Attendees at our November workshop took away some great ideas about identifying their target audience.

Because targeting audiences is so vital to an organization's development success, the concept is woven into many of the coaching principals I use at KMAC & Associates.

Through Board Retreats, we help members identify target audiences for relationship-building opportunities. Every time I work with a board, it's easy to tell which board members have WALLOP! by their level of interest and participation. These are people who are willing to give their heart, soul, talent and resources to our community. WALLOP! is the action of our commitment.

Quote

Remember: Target audiences are of upmost importance when recruiting activity sponsors. Recruiting and developing relationships with businesses that share your core values is essential to longterm, sustained success. Nonprofit staff and volunteers need to cultivate partners that have a philanthropic mission that aligns with the nonprofit organization, and who would benefit from being in front of the demographics of that activity.

As you implement your vision for 2012, focus on your leadership group, your staff, the volunteers of your organization, and your supporters and community partners: how are you fostering their engagement and involvement? How are you nurturing and celebrating their gifts of time, talent, treasure, and influence? What can you do to help them find the WALLOP! in their role with your organization?

Sincerely,

WALLOP! Words to Live By

WALLOPIn our last newsletter, we asked you to help us define WALLOP!

To recap: As we look at the key players in our organization - the leadership, the staff, and the board members - we search for people who embody the 5 Ws of Leadership:

  • Work - rolling up their sleeves and helping out on a project, being a committee leader, or providing volunteers for a service project.
  • Wisdom - sharing knowledge and expertise, loaning out professionals to help with a project, or providing experience to an organization.
  • Well-Connectedness - making introductions, bringing like-minded people together to help further an organization's mission, or sharing influence.
  • Wealth - counting the organization as one of the top three nonprofit organizations they give to financially.
  • WALLOP! - the impact, the punch, and the long-term enthusiasm for an organization that leads them to search out opportunities to share the organization's story and help the organization achieve its goals.

Ideally, becoming involved in an organization, using the first four Ws, strengthens that relationship. The fifth W, WALLOP!, is where the magic begins!

Work + Wisdom + Well-Connectedness + Wealth = WALLOP!

WALLOP

Doug Cross, representing San Antonio Lighthouse for the Blind, embodies WALLOP!  No one questions that Doug is a believer in the organization.  Not only has he generously given his own time and resources, he effectively recruits and motivates others who want to share his joy of giving!

Tracy Tylman is another example of WALLOP! in action. As a business leader, she explores innovative ways to benefit nonprofit causes and create win-win partnerships.

Here are some other definitions of WALLOP!

"WALLOP! is when you know what organization
your friends believe in."

"WALLOP! is the smile on a supporter's face when they receive a thank you note from a client and tell somebody about it."

"WALLOP! is serving as a walking billboard
for the nonprofit you serve."

"WALLOP! is putting your time, treasure, and
talent where your mouth is."

"WALLOP! is putting your words into action."

"WALLOP! is impact."

"WALLOP! is the gift beyond time, talent, treasure, and influence."

"WALLOP! is the gift that keeps on giving."

"WALLOP! is something that grows
with engagement and involvement."

"WALLOP! is when engagement is a choice not a chore."

"WALLOP! is when you love what you do for the organization."

"WALLOP! draws supporters because they see the joy of giving you experience and they want some of it for themselves."

Kathy's Commentary

Like so many of you, we have taken time at the beginning of this year to assess where we are, where we're headed, and where we want to be. To help us accomplish our goals, while still continuing to provide you with information, tools, and content to reach your potential - and find the WALLOP! - we're moving to a quarterly format for our newsletters.

You'll still be hearing from me, though, in the form of periodic emails with announcements about upcoming workshops, conferences and special events relationship-building activities. We'll also be sending tips you can take to your staff, board members, and volunteers to help them develop their WALLOP! in order to make the most of their work on behalf of your nonprofit organization.

We look forward to working with you in 2012 - we're excited to see what is in store for our community, thanks to the astounding work you do throughout San Antonio and South Texas.
