Greetings!

"Give thanks for unknown blessings already on their way."

~ Native American Saying

Wrap the summer up with Labor Day, take a turn at Halloween, and all of a sudden, Christmas is everywhere.

But wait - what happened to Thanksgiving?

Even before the kids had their costumes ready for trick-or-treating, Christmas decorations were lining store aisles. Before the candy was unwrapped, holiday displays were front and center in shop windows. Just a few days into November, Christmas tree tents were popping up around town.

Didn't we forget something?

With all the excitement of Halloween and the anticipation of Christmas and Hannukah, Thanksgiving can get lost in the shuffle. But Thanksgiving is our kind of holiday - a time to show our gratitude for the support we've received throughout the year, and give thanks for the blessings we've been given.

"Thanksgiving, after all, is a word of action."
~ W.J. Cameron

The nonprofit community has a responsibility to give thanks in a sustained, active way. And, as staff members and board members of nonprofit organizations, we're in it together. In extending their thanks to the donors and supporters of our organizations, staff members become donor-relations specialists - the work of stewardship is an on-going process. But board members can have a huge impact on a donor's experience, too. By reaching out - with a handwritten note or a personal phone call - a board member's appreciation goes a long way toward strengthening rapport with a donor, and turning that donor into a long-term partner in your organization's mission.

National Philanthropy Day was November 15.  We want to acknowledge and express our personal appreciation to the worthy honorees recognized by the Association of Fundraising Professionals at their luncheon held in San Antonio.

To all the individuals, foundations and businesses who generously share the "five Ws" of leadership - work, wisdom, wealth, well-connectedness and WALLOP! - to make nonprofit services available, missions achievable and our community a better place to live, work and raise our families, we give thanks.

But everyone has something to give."

2011 Outstanding Philanthropic Small Corporation

"I am speaking for the entire Winston community in recognizing STMM for their consistent support of our program, which helps children faced with learning differences in the greater San Antonio area, and their generous support and partnerships with other deserving nonprofit organizations."

~ Paul R. Erwin, Director of Advancement

The Winston School, San Antonio

When good business decisions intersect with the joy of giving, we call it the "sweet spot" of philanthropic giving. That "sweet spot" is at the core of the San Antonio Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals' National Philanthropy Day held earlier this week.

We want to congratulate South Texas Money Management, which was named Outstanding Philanthropic Small Business/Corporation for 2011. STMM is a company that continues to solidify its partnerships with area nonprofit organizations, as it reaches out to strengthen the San Antonio community.

Founded in 2000, South Texas Money Management is an independent investment advisor, headquartered in San Antonio. With approximately $1.7 billion in assets under management, 80% of STMM's clients are individuals, with the remaining 20% being institutional clients, including public nonprofit organizations and private foundations.

At STMM, the culture of giving - both in time and in money...read more

Culligan Cares

"Each of our actions is a pebble dropped into still waters."

~ Kathy MacNaughton, KMAC & Associates

Culligan Southwest is a 75 year strong, locally-based company serving San Antonio's need to combat the hard water that is ever-present in our Central Texas area.  Led by the Boerner family, Culligan strives to serve the public by helping to improve their water quality.  In addition to their business mission, Culligan Southwest has a desire to be a good corporate citizen by taking part in building a stronger, more vibrant community through targeted corporate giving.

Many San Antonio businesses - including Culligan - tend to be more "low profile" and "behind-the-scenes" in supporting causes due to limited resources of time, staff and money.  They do what they can and feel strongly that a more targeted, albeit moderate, level of support by a broad spectrum of local businesses is meaningful in helping people and organizations reach their goals in the San Antonio area.   Taking the time to stop and evaluate their giving strategy, as Culligan has recently done by establishing a Philanthropic Footprint with the help of KMAC & Associates, has clarified Culligan's vision for what...read more

Kathy's Commentary

CommentaryEveryone knows I love a good acronym - that's why I came up with WALLOP!

WALLOP!

When
Auspicious
Leaders
Love
Our
Potential

As we look at the key players in our organization - the leadership, the staff and the board members - we search for people who embody the

5 Ws of Leadership:

  • Work - rolling up their sleeves and helping out on a project, being a committee leader, providing volunteers for a service project.
  • Wisdom - sharing knowledge and expertise, loaning out professionals to help with a project, providing experience to an organization
  • Well-Connectedness - making introductions, bringing like-minded people together to help further an organization's mission, sharing influence
  • Wealth - counting the organization as one of the top three nonprofit organizations you give to financially
  • WALLOP! - the impact, the punch, the long-term enthusiasm for an organization that leads you to search out opportunities to share the organization's story and help the organization achieve its goals

Ideally, becoming involved in an organization using the first four Ws strengthens that relationship, but the fifth W, WALLOP!, that is where the magic begins!

Work + Wisdom + Well-Connectedness + Wealth = WALLOP!

Now, we want to know how you define it.

What does WALLOP! mean to you?

We're starting our WALLOP! contest, asking you to send us your definition of WALLOP! or a story of a person in your organization that models WALLOP!

We'll draw three entries and those winners will receive two gift certificates each for a KMAC sponsored workshop of the winner's choice OR one free hour of consultation time with Kathy.

In our next newsletter, we'll announce the winners, and we'll share some of our favorite definitions with you!

Here is your opportunity to celebrate those who take
their WALLOP! for your organization out into the community
and as a result, make wonderful things happen!

Send in your entry NLT Friday, December 9, 2011.
