Greetings!
"Life is about learning; when you stop learning, you die." ~ Tom Clancy, Author
Can you believe it? In less than a week, most of the kids in our community will be heading back to school. Time flies! For many families, the end of summer is a flurry of activity - getting our back-to-school gear, stocking up on school supplies, and squeezing in some last-minute fun before the school year starts.
But, as our children rejoin their classmates and get back into the swing of things at school, it's time for us to do the same for our nonprofit organizations, and in our careers. Consider it "back to school" for grownups: a time to review our challenges and triumphs of the past, renew our enthusiasm and energy in our mission, and focus on the future.
In this month's newsletter, we'll give you some tools for enhancing your professional growth and some best practices for renewing your passion and enthusiasm for your mission. We'll also provide information on a series of continuing education workshops I've developed - scheduled throughout the coming months - designed to help your staff and board members enhance your organization's fundraising and development plan.
Do you have a plan for your continued education?

Professional Growth | |
"Without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement and success have no meaning." ~ Benjamin Franklin
Remember when you were a kid, and heading back to school for a new year? Chances are you greeted the first few days of school with a mix of dread and excitement. After all, like most children, we loved our summers - easy, breezy times to pal around with friends and enjoy time away from school. At the same time, it was always nice to get back to our routine, and see classmates we hadn't kept up with during the summer break.
As you pack your children off to go back to school, you may be feeling the same things: excitement about what lies ahead, but dread at all the work yet to do before the year wraps up.
That's why we believe in the power of continuing education; the need for each of us to work on our professional and personal development as a way of continuing to reach our goals, as individuals and as part of our teams.
"It's all about relationships."
I believe in the need to nurture relationships as a way to build continued strength and success for organizations, but many times, people simply don't know where - or how - to start.
To help you and your organization get started on the process of renewing, reenergizing and recommitting to more dynamic relationships, I've developed a series of workshops addressing this vital building block to nonprofit organizations.
With these workshops, it's about...read more

Kathy's Commentary |
What inspires you to continue to grow - personally and professionally?
How do you know your organization is on the right track when it comes to renewing their energy for the challenges and opportunities ahead?
Is your nonprofit group nurturing those vital relationships with your supporters that will enable it to sustain its fundraising needs?
Do your key staff and volunteers understand your long-term strategic goals and your organization's mission? Are they able to articulate it? Are they effective, enthusiastic cheerleaders who can advocate for your organization?
We challenge you to take our "Best Practices - Continuing Education Assessment" to gauge your nonprofit group's strengths and its areas of improvement. Where are you hitting the mark? What can you improve upon to help propel your organization to the next level?
We hope you're inspired to head "back to school" and reenergize yourself, your organization and your community supporters. In that spirit, we want to take a few moments to introduce you to three organizations that highlight the importance of education and personal development. Communities in Schools, SA Youth and City Year all enjoy a broad base of support in our city, and all are recognized as having a real impact in our community. We applaud their efforts to focus much-needed attention on the issue of education in our community. |

Back to School Means Many Things for
The Children and Youth at SA Youth
For the 3,000-plus children in our community learning centers, preparing to go back to school means staying fit during the summer, keeping in shape academically by continuing to learn, and exploring new ideas such as solar energy and water conservation. It also means preparing for the school year by supplying those children - most of whom are from very low-income homes - with backpacks and school supplies. For young adults who have quit school, going back to school means reenrolling this academic year. "Many of our youth haven't been in school for many years," said Cynthia Le Monds, CEO of SA Youth. "So returning to school takes a lot of courage and motivation for young adults who are low-income, unemployed and undereducated." SA Youth's YouthBuild program...read more |
