Greetings!

Ah, summer!  A time to slow down, relax, enjoy life, right?  Maybe take a little vacation, spend some time with the family, read that novel sitting on the nightstand.

I know what you're saying - wishful thinking, Kathy!

A quick trip to the coast is great, but sometimes you need an extended vacation to really unwind and contemplate "life."  I know your schedule is busy - job, family, extended family, community commitments - the details and required day-to-day decisions can be overwhelming.

All the more reason to step back, reassess and get a perspective on the big picture. We all need to bring things into focus and remind ourselves of our purpose and value in those important relationships.

We need to create an opportunity to regenerate, refresh, clarify direction, and define what is important in the grand scheme of life.

The same is true in your role as a board member of a nonprofit organization.  Do you clearly understand the vision of the organization and your role in guiding it to fulfillment?  What are the long term issues - internal and external - that will affect success vs. mediocrity, or worse, survival itself?

Nonprofit boards are charged with two responsibilities - governance and sustainability.  A board retreat allows the board to step back from its more immediate role of governance and take an extended look at the future of the organization.  To identify areas that need to be addressed now, in order to ensure continued growth - issues that will determine sustainability.

The results of a board retreat can help the organization get a perspective on the big picture - to bring everything into focus and remind us of the purpose and value of our vision.  A board retreat can create an opportunity for your organization to regenerate, refresh, clarify direction, and define what is important in the grand scheme of life.

"I see this retreat as the important step in allowing
the board to be a mature, wise, cohesive group."

~ Stevie Ricks, Staff Member, Inspire Community Fine Art Center

When was the last time you held an all-day board retreat?

Sincerely,

What Board Retreats Can Do For Your Organization

"Your vision will come clear only when

you can look into your own heart.

Who looks outside dreams, who looks inside, awakes."

~ Carl Gustav Jung, Swiss Psychiatrist

So often, as we work toward fulfilling the mission of our organization, we forget the vision that will get us there.

We forget the forest, as we scrutinize the trees.

For an organization's Board of Directors, that's especially true.

That's why Board Retreats are vital to a nonprofit group's long-term success; they give the Board members an opportunity to look within their organization and identify long-term issues affecting the organization.  This will also stimulate them  to become more vested in the mission and in the vision of the organization.

The Board of Directors is charged with creating the vision for the organization and establishing a strategy to achieve that vision. They are the visionaries.

A friend of mine serves on a board, and noted that their membership had been declining over the past year. She shared her frustration with me, asking, "Why are we not - as a board - looking at the underlying reasons our membership is down? How it is affecting the sustainability of our organization?"

Those are valid questions to ask.

While the Board has the responsibility for assuring that the organization is accomplishing it current mission, it also must...read more

Kathy's Commentary: Walking the Walk

Becky Cunningham's Commitment to the Fight Against Cancer

"Almost everyone has been touched by cancer,
either through their own personal battle
or through someone they love."

~ American Cancer Society

What inspires you to make a difference? What motivates you to take that first step toward changing a life? For Becky Cunningham, Marketing Director for KMAC & Associates, her inspiration to take many steps in the fight against cancer began with her grandfathers.

Last month, Becky put on her tennies, rallied her friends, family and neighbors, and participated in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. The first time she participated in Relay for Life with her team - Friends for Life - she walked for her grandfathers, Howard Wolcott and John McClung.RFL Alan

That was 6 years ago.

This year, her inspiration came from a 3 year old boy named Alan Sanders.

Alan and his parents Judy and Harold are close friends with Becky and her family. In fact, Alan is friends with Becky's son Dylan, so Becky has watched Alan's battle against cancer since he was diagnosed when he was just 18 months old.

"Dylan and Alan are the same age, but have led very different lives," ...read more
