Greetings!

"It's not that we (nonprofits) don't know our stories, but

we're not conveying them well. We're not getting our

messages out (to the business community) about the

outcome and the differences we're making in the community."

~ Kathy MacNaughton, CFRE

It's the ying and yang of the nonprofit world: pairing up community organizations with the small-to-medium-sized businesses who are the backbone of our economy.

February 25, I had the pleasure of participating in the Association of Fundraising Professionals San Antonio 2011 Conference, during which I was able to share some really exciting results of a survey we recently conducted at KMAC & Associates. As part of our presentation, we invited four professionals with wide-ranging backgrounds to weigh in on those findings during our panel discussion - our thanks to Lauren Stanley, Stacy Seaborn, Ryan Berg and Tracy Tylman for their candid insight.

In our study, "Business Practices For Giving Back to the Community," we drilled down into the world of nonprofit partnerships to learn more about the requests, contacts and attitudes behind charitable solicitations that cross the desks of small business owners and managers each day, and the motivation behind making - or denying - the "ask."

We learned a lot.

And we wanted to share.

Not surprisingly, our survey showed that relationships are the key to building successful partnerships between nonprofits and the business community. Without strong, sustained relationships, charitable giving is lackluster at best. Nonexistent at worst. Businesses want to participate in the nonprofit community's success. It's a matter of finding the right fit.

The findings of our study wouldn't be possible without the participation of the businesses who agreed to complete our survey: for that, we have immense thanks. And, the study wouldn't be relevant if not for the nonprofit organizations who listened, learned and pledged to develop better relationships with the business community.

Sincerely,

What is it about working with nonprofits that works for you?

What doesn't?

In our recent survey, "Business Preferences for Giving Back to the Community," our group at KMAC & Associates asked those two fundamental questions. Those questions - along with the answers we received - set the tone for our look at nonprofit giving and the business community.

By overwhelming numbers, we learned that relationships and dialogue make the difference.

They're everything.

With strong, sustained relationships, the partnership works. Dialogue, conversation, investments happen.

But when relationships are ignored, taken for granted, or set aside, it's a deal-breaker.

That's not good news for nonprofit organizations.

As we talked with small and medium-sized businesses, we learned something fundamental to creating win-win partnerships between the business world and the nonprofit world: we have to stop...read more
