Greetings!

"We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give." ~ Winston Churchill

Everyone loves to give... whether we realize it or not.
We love giving the perfect gift. The sage advice. The helping hand.
That spirit of giving is the theme of this month's newsletter. Each November we celebrate National Philanthropy Day®, a time to honor those who exemplify the spirit of philanthropy.

Dictionary:  phi·lan·thro·py  (fĭ-lăn'thrə-pē)
  • The effort or inclination to increase the well-being of humankind, as by charitable aid or donations.
  • Love of humankind in general.
  • Something, such as an activity or institution, intended to promote human welfare.

Of course, November is also the month of Thanksgiving, so it's appropriate we consider our blessings, and celebrate those who share their gifts with others. People such as Scott Barr, who looked inside his soul, and realized that he had a purpose in life which he had been overlooking. Now, he's transforming his successful contracting business into a model of philanthropic giving and leadership building. His story surely will inspire others to examine the meaning of the word "success" in their own lives.

People like Ruth Moreland, whose passion for music and love for the human voice led her to create two ensembles that celebrate a cappella music. Ask anyone who has heard Voci di Sorelle or The Copperleaf Quintet in concert, and they'll tell you the music and compositions are enchanting; a perfect way to uplift the spirit.

How do you define what is important in your life? What is your passion? Is there a way you can share it with the community? As you reflect on the Thanksgiving Holiday, we hope you will count your good fortune, examine your unique abilities, and consider how you can use them for the greater good.

Here at KMAC & Associates, we wish continued blessings to you and your loved ones, and a very Happy Thanksgiving.

Sincerely,
Kathy's Signature

"Focus on significance, rather than success"

There are times in life when we get that "a-ha" moment. A moment of clarity that brings everything into focus. Suddenly it all makes sense.

For Scott Barr of Southwest Exteriors, 2005 brought that moment. "I realized I was called to focus on significance, rather than success," Barr said. Ever since, he's been living his life with purpose.

The turning point came in December 2007, when his coach Jeff Thompson led him through a strategic life plan based on Tom Paterson's book Living the Life You Were Meant to Live.  "The Life Plan" helped Barr find clarity in his purpose. "I looked at my entire life and the highs and lows, and what God was preparing me for," Barr said. Through that exercise, Barr started creating action steps to live out that plan.

Taking proven business practices that have helped his company succeed, Barr and his team started work on developing a new business model, with philanthropic goals at its heart. The mission... read more

Ruth Moreland, Founder and Executive Director -
Painting With Sound

Ruth Moreland
As a young girl growing up in Central Illinois, music was always part of Ruth Moreland's life. "One of my earliest memories is of singing," Moreland said. "I had a large extended family, and everyone would sit around the table and sing."

Moreland's passion for music has never faded, it just moved from the kitchen table to the living room. In 2003, Moreland was composing a piece for women's voices and oboe. She hand-picked 12 women from various groups and students with whom she had worked to form the tapestry of voices for her creation. During the initial rehearsal in her living room, she realized she had much more than one performance. From that serendipitous beginning,...read more

Question posed in last month's newsletter:

How do you replace special events with RELATIONSHIP-BUILDING ACTIVITIES and still meet your budget needs?

It is a change in paradigm.  Quit looking at your events as an evening of entertainment.  Let's face it, no matter how spectacular, we cannot compete with today's entertainment options.  And besides, who donates to a worthy cause based on the menu, venue or décor?  We can't be sloppy with those items, but they alone are not going to move us toward our strategic goals.

Instead of the "fluff" of a special event, let's concentrate on the "stuff" - identifying, building and strengthening relationships with those who might care about our mission.  Stop basing your invitation list on...read more
