Texas Renewables 2012 - Explore Strategies for Unified Energy Success
Old Energy vs New Unified Energy System
December 10 - 13 in Hyatt Lost Pines Resort, Bastrop, TX

Fundamental shifts in how our society generates, transports, and consumes energy are happening all around us today. Economic conditions, environmental imperatives, and political trends are converging and colliding in a fashion that will either force a chaotic and perhaps disastrous reversal of field significantly restoring the "old energy order," or lead to a more measured relieving of pressure through transition to a more complex integrated "Unified Energy System." TREIA is working toward, and betting on, the latter.
Each sector of the renewable energy industry must grasp the nature of the "Unified Energy System" and envision its niche. This requires a solid understanding of the forces at play. Business survivors will need a solid knowledge of the financial options and opportunities that are evolving, the nature and implications of ongoing and future climate shift, the promising but mercurial world of technology, and the realities of our ever changing political class. Texas Renewables 2012 is designed with these issues in mind.
This year's agenda will offer top-notch presenters from businesses, agencies and institutions in the forefront, actively punching the reset button on our energy world view. The conference itself will embrace format and production approaches in tune with, and designed to pull us all toward, the leading edge.

The Roundup Rides Again

If you missed this year's Roundup you may have heard rumors that Russel Smith, executive director at TREIA survived a ride on a Texas Longhorn, and here's proof. Actually he said he felt right at home in the saddle, but a bit strange on a steer - having herded, roped, wrestled, branded, ear-marked, dehorned, and altered them, but never saddled and ridden one. Plan to be there next year to challenge him to ride again - nothing else, just ride!
After months of organizing and preparations the successful return of the Renewable Energy Roundup & Green Living Fair took place September 29th and 30th with a Kids Environmental Educational Day preceding it on Friday, September 28th.
Attendance exceeded expectations, given the inclement weather, with many people representing regions across Texas excited about the return of The Roundup.
If you visit Texas Renewables on Facebook you'll be able to see Debbie Bissonet's comment there which reflected similar comments by many others. Debbie said, "It was wonderful. Really great speakers and vendors. We missed not having the Roundup last year, but thanks for putting together 2012. We really look forward to the Renewables Roundup." Thanks Debbie we look forward to another 12 years of rounding up renewable energy fun and events!

DOE Launches SunShot Competition To Install Solar Energy At A Fraction Of Today's Price
Washington, D.C. (September 12, 2012)
As part of the Energy Department's SunShot Initiative, which is working to make solar energy competitive with other forms of energy without subsidy by the end of the decade, the Energy Department today announced the start of a new competition to make it faster, easier, and cheaper to install rooftop solar energy systems. The SunShot Prize makes a total of $10 million in cash awards available to the first three teams that repeatedly demonstrate the non-hardware costs, or price to plug in, can be as low as $1 per watt (W) for small-scale photovoltaic (PV) systems on American homes and businesses. This ambitious target represents a decrease in the "soft costs" of solar energy systems - including permitting, licensing, connecting to the grid and other non-hardware costs - by more than 65 percent. By breaking a significant price barrier that was considered unachievable only a decade ago, the winning teams will demonstrate that solar energy is an affordable solution for American families and businesses.

"Clean Energy Works for Texas" Campaign Files Petition To Boost Texas Solar and Geothermal Power
By Cyrus Reed, Lone Star Chapter, Sierra Club
A coalition of environmental, public health, and labor groups launched the Clean Energy Works for Texas campaign by filing a rulemaking petition with the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) of Texas. The expanded Texas Renewable Portfolio Standard passed in 2005, helping launch the booming Texas wind industry that is currently providing 10% of the state's electricity. Importantly, the law also intended for a portion of the mandated renewables to come from non-wind sources, such as solar, biomass and geothermal. To date, the PUC has taken no action to implement this portion of the law. The filing by the Coalition asks the PUC to open a rule-making process within 60 days to help kick start utility scale solar and geothermal energy and other non-wind renewables in Texas.
The Sierra Club, Public Citizen Texas, Progress Texas, the SEED Coalition, the Texas BlueGreen Apollo Alliance and several other organizations jointly filed the petition to the Public Utilities Commission. The rulemaking petition would create both a 500 MW mandatory target as well as a larger 3,000 mandatory target by 2025 for non-wind renewables.
Comments should be submitted to the PUC at 1701 Congress, Austin, Texas 78701 by October 19th and reference Project No. 40740. A copy of the rulemaking petition can be viewed at the PUC filing exchange website or by clicking here.

Longtime TREIA Member, LCRA's Tom Foreman, To Retire This Year
Tom Foreman, Manager, NERC Compliance & Cyber Security, Lower Colorado River Authority, has announced he will be retiring on November 9. Tom contributed significantly to the Authority's support of renewable energy over many years, bringing the LCRA into TREIA in 1989. He served as President of TREIA in 1996. His perspective, guidance, and wisdom on the Board, as a committee and conference chair, served TREIA well. And while his job title and responsibilities shifted away from involvement in issues that touched on renewables in recent years, he has maintained his personal interest in, and support of, TREIA and its objectives.
