TREIA PUC Filing Proposes Questions On ERCOT Brattle Report

TREIA filed comments under PUC Project 40480 (Commission Proceeding Regarding Policy Options On Resource Adequacy) in advance of the PUC Workshop held on Friday, July 27. The workshop focus was on the June 1 report by The Brattle Group (commissioned by ERCOT) titled "ERCOT Investment Incentives and Resource Adequacy." The TREIA filing was in response to a Commission request for questions that should be posed during the workshop.

The TREIA filing is linked on the TREIA web site Home Page, and can be accessed by clicking here>

TREIA Senate B & C Testimony Addresses Generation Adequacy And Grid Reliability

TREIA submitted testimony for the July 10 Senate Business & Commerce Committee Hearing regarding the Interim Charge Concerning ERCOT Protocols. As has been the case in other formal TREIA filings in recent months, the opportunity was taken to emphasize the benefits of renewable energy resources and policies that encourage their use in addressing the challenges in Texas of electric generation adequacy, meeting peak demand, and grid reliability.

Primary author of these comments was Cynthia Redwine, principal of Clean Power Professionals, LLC, and General Counsel to Meridian Solar, Inc. with significant input coming from members of the TREIA Board Executive Committee and the TREIA Legal Committee.

Don't Miss The Opportunity - Exhibit, Sponsor, Attend

In today's world where the very idea of renewable energy is being challenged perhaps more aggressively than at any time since the early 1980s, the saying that "the best defense is a good offense" should be taken to heart. The Renewable Energy Roundup & Green Living Fair, back after a one year hiatus, offers the industry a significant way to play offense.

EXHIBIT

Exhibitor applications are flooding in, so if your company or organization has a favorite booth location, better hurry up and nail it down. Educating and firing up the public is a major mission of the Roundup, but so is selling industry products and services. Remember, in addition to taking orders, exhibitors may sell and take payment for items on site.

SPONSOR

In addition to co-organizers TREIA and the Texas Center for Policy Studies, here are some of the sponsors already on board: HEB, Sierra Club - Lone Star Chapter, Austin Energy, Sierra Homes, Rainfilters of Texas and Meridian Solar. Now is the time to get signed up as a sponsor to take maximum advantage of the available benefits. Please consider joining these supporters in sponsoring the Roundup to help keep this premier event going and growing.

CPS Logo CPS Energy, OCI Solar Power Launch Nation's Largest Municipally Owned Solar Project

San Antonio, TX (July 23, 2012) -

A landmark deal signed today by CPS Energy and OCI Solar Power will result in the construction of 400 megawatts (MW) of solar energy, bring several manufacturing facilities that produce solar panel components, and create 805 jobs in San Antonio.

CPS Energy President and CEO Doyle Beneby inked the contract with Tony Dorazio, president of OCI Solar Power, making the 25-year power purchase and economic development agreement official. This unique, first-of-its kind, manufacturing-to-generation contract follows several months of talks between negotiation teams with the utility and its most recent New Energy Economy partners. The 400-MW San Antonio project is the largest in the nation among municipal utilities, and will catapult Texas into the top five U.S. solar producing states.

Providing enough electricity for nearly 70,000 local households-or about 10 percent of San Antonio's customers-the final deal also will deliver:

  • new corporate headquarters in San Antonio;
  • an estimated $100 million high-tech U.S. manufacturing operation in south San Antonio;
  • 800-plus professional and technical jobs with an annual payroll of nearly $40 million; 75 percent of those jobs will be in the renewable energy sector;
  • $700 million in annual economic impact;
  • $1 billion in construction investment; and,
  • a 25-year power purchase agreement.

Energy Department Breaks Ground on Turbine Test Facility

Lubbock, TX (July 18, 2012) -

The Energy Department joined with Texas Tech University and the department's Sandia National Laboratories on July 17 to break ground on a new state-of-the-art wind turbine test facility in Lubbock, Texas. Supported by a $2.6 million investment from the department's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, the Scaled Wind Farm Technology (SWIFT) facility will be the first public facility of its kind to use multiple wind turbines to measure how wind turbine wakes interact with one another in a wind farm. Scheduled to begin operation later this year, the facility will help wind turbine designers and manufacturers continue to drive down the cost of wind energy by reducing the aerodynamic losses of wind energy plants, enhancing energy capture, and mitigating turbine damage.  More click here>

Electric Power Engineers

EPE Growing Staff, Working With IBM Research On Innovative Transmission Software

Electric Power Engineers, Inc. (EPE) and IBM Research are working together to create the next generation in electrical distribution system analysis software and merge the industry with the latest in Geographic Information System (GIS) technology. Though still in the very early stages of development, the goal is to create a platform that can autonomously troubleshoot typical problems that occur in distribution systems.

"We believe that a platform allowing users to quickly tweak critical variables during the optimization process will provide more efficient solutions and fewer losses," said Hala Ballouz, EPE President.

Hill Country Ecobuilders + Hill Country Ecopower = Native

Native

This summer, well established Texas eco-builder, Hill Country Ecobuilders and renewable energy systems provider, Hill Country Ecopower, will merge to form a new cohesive green-solutions entity known simply as NativeWhile Native will retain its ability to provide specific construction and energy services to other builders, architects, or homeowners simply looking to retrofit, Native's real strength will lie in streamlined integration.

Lloyd Lee, native Texan and founder of both Hill Country Ecopower and Hill Country Ecobuilders, remarks, "Building a home with multiple contractors is a challenge in itself. Adding non-conventional technologies like geothermal, solar, and rainwater collection adds even more complexity because there are fewer installers compared to conventional building systems and it requires a different type of integration into the overall project. Native, on the other hand, seeks to address the lack of a streamlined approach by providing in-house services from design and conception, to contracting and construction, and finally to maintenance and monitoring."  More click here>
