Van Ton-Quinlivan

THE PROGRAMS
of the Division of Workforce and Economic Development bridge the skills and jobs mismatch and prepare California's workforce for 21st century careers.

The Workforce and Economic Development Division serves as administrator for several streams of state and federal funds, including:
  • Governor's Career Technical Education Pathways Initiative (SB 70)
  • Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act of 2006
  • Proposition 98 dollars for Apprenticeship, Economic & Workforce Development (EWD) and Career Technical Education (CTE)

The Division collaborates with employers, organized labor, local communities, their community colleges and other education parties through programming supported by these funds to close the skills gap and foster successful student completion.

A CRITICAL CONVERSATION

for the Central and Mother Lode Regions is scheduled for Thursday, September 20, 2012 at the Merced College Business Resource Center. This will be an open town-hall meeting for community college leaders, faculty, and staff.  All are invited to participate and learn about the Strategic Framework of Vice Chancellor Ton-Quinlivan's Division entitled Doing What MATTERS for Jobs and the Economy.  (Follow the Vice Chancellor on Twitter @WorkforceVan)

One of the future strategies within this Framework will be the braiding of SB70, Perkins Leadership, and EWD funding streams to execute on regional sector strategies as is the proposed direction of SB1402, SB1070 and the Perkins V blueprint.  This Critical Conversation is a forum to assist and support the colleges as the Doing What MATTERS for Jobs and the Economy Framework is activated.  Participants will be encouraged to ask questions and share their ideas about the Framework and their ideas to facilitate a successful transition.

Co-hosting will be Dr. Dennis Gervin, President of Columbia College and member of the Vice Chancellor's EDPAC advisory board.

Inclusive Planning Process Leads to
STRATEGIC WORK PLAN PRIORITIES for the
Central Region Consortium in 2012-2013
George on Floor
George Boodrookas

This year's Central Region Consortium's (CRC) Annual Planning meeting attracted over 45 community college stakeholders to learn, share, and plan for 2012-2013.

Presentations from Chancellor's Office staff, EWD Center Directors, and the Bay Area's CTE Employment Outcomes Project provided a framework for regional discussion and planning.  As we concluded the 3-day meeting, facilitated by George Boodrookas, consensus was reached on Strategic Priorities for the Consortium for 2012-2013.

This year's annual meeting was also a time to say, "Good-bye!" to our friend and colleague, George Boodrookas, who has served the Central Region as a workforce and economic development leader for many years . . . most recently as EWD Co-Chair to the Central Region Consortium.  George's new assignment at Modesto Junior College as Dean of College Advancement & Community Education and Executive Director, MJC Foundation led him to the decision to step down as Co-Chair.

With George's departure as EWD co-chair, a call for nominations was sent out last spring, and the final result was the endorsement of Dr. Louann Waldner as EWD Co-Chair.  Louann serves as the Director of the EWD Center for Applied Competitive Technologies (CACT) at College of the Sequoias in Visalia.  She joins Jim Andersen, CTE Co-Chair and Dean of Instruction at Merced College, to lead the Consortium.  WELCOME, Louann!

You will find all Planning Meeting documents on the Minutes page of the CRC Website at

If you have interest in working with colleagues in the region to accomplish the regional priorities, please review the
STRATEGIC PRIORITIES LIST, and email Sue Clark.  Conference calls to begin planning for each priority will begin in August 2012.  We look forward to your participation!
