Today I announce my retirement as Chancellor to the Board of Governors of California Community Colleges,effective September 1.

I have greatly enjoyed this work since becoming Chancellor on January 1, 2009.  And I have particularly appreciated the hard work and cooperation of the staff here at the Chancellor's office.

It is true that it has been a tough time for community colleges because of the financial difficultiesofthestate of California. But I have been received warmly in Sacramento and on college campuses by trustees, faculty, staff,  administration, and students.  I have proudly represented our colleges before  the legislature, the Governor, and many other audiences.

Lacreta and I plan to return to our home in the Pasadena area. We will enjoy travel and visiting with family and friends. I will continue to speak on occasions and consult on a part-tim ebasis.

But mainly,retirement will be a to,e tp tale ot easu after a career pf 58 years.I have been extremely blessed with good health and a rewarding career both in higher education and public service.  I am so glad of that, and I want to thank the many people who have made this possible.
