In-State Tuition to Undocumented Students

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - California Community Colleges Chancellor Jack Scott today issued a statement about the U.S. Supreme Court rejecting a challenge to California's policy that grants in-state tuition at its colleges and universities to high schools graduates who are undocumented students:

"I am pleased with the U.S. Supreme Court's decision today.  This is good news for thousands of California students who have attended a high school in our state for at least three years and graduated.  Most of these students were brought to this country at a very young age and should not have their futures jeopardized because of the actions of their parents.  These hard-working individuals have been long-time residents of California and will most likely continue to live here and contribute to our economy after they reach their higher education goals.  I voted for AB 540 when I was in the Legislature and I am pleased that the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the prior decision by the California Supreme Court determining that the state law does not conflict with the federal law.  These students deserve to be treated like any other Californian who has been here, worked hard and wants the opportunity to achieve a higher education."   

The California Community Colleges is the largest system of higher education in the nation. It is composed of 72 districts and 112 colleges serving 2.76 million students each year. Community colleges supply workforce training, basic skills courses in English and math, and prepare students for transfer to four-year colleges and universities. The Chancellor's Office provides leadership, advocacy and support under the direction of the Board of Governors of the California Community Colleges.
