| PROTECT PELL GRANTS
a message from Scott Lay, President and Chief Executive Officer,
CC League of California
We are in Washington, DC and we need your help! On Friday night, House Republicans unveiled their spending cut demands in order to keep the federal government running after the current continuing resolution expires March 4 Reversing promises earlier in the week to protect Pell Grants, House leadership now proposes an $845 (15%) cut in the maximum Pell Grant. This will hurt 418,000 California community college students, eliminating approximately $200 million in federal grants to our students beginning this fall. While the Pell Grant program has swolen in the last couple of years, the cost increase is because of the large number of students enrolling in higher education, and the larger number who have very low family incomes because of the economy. The long-term federal budget deficit needs to concern all of us, but eliminating funding for needy students is exactly the wrong approach to take. Votes will be taken this week on this continuing resolution. Please support us by contacting your member of Congress today. We just launched an advocacy website to make it super easy: www.savemypellgrant.com or www.dontcutpellgrants.com. Call your member of Congress, and forward this message to friends and co-workers! Sincerely, Scott Lay President and Chief Executive Officer Orange Coast College '94 ________________________________ Community College League of California 2017 O Street, Sacramento, California 95811 916.444.8641 . www.ccleague.org
