TURN A "1-1/2 PERSON" LIFTING JOB INTO A "1 PERSON" JOB .... SAFELY!
As we are all aware, two issues that heavily impact our costs, whether private or public sector, are worker productivity and the costs associated with workers compensation claims. In speaking with many of our customers about the issue they feel pulled between the two. If they assign two individuals to a particular task because it is just a little more than a single employee can safely handle on his or her own their operating costs go up. If they don't an injury may occur which for the worker results in pain and suffering in the short term and possibly a significant deterioration in his or her quality of life in the long term. For the employer there is lost productivity, re-shuffling of manpower to cover the affected employee, and the significant impact on its WSIB premiums which like all insurance premiums rise quickly but drop very slowly. If they leave it to the employee to use his or her judgment situations often occur where had the employee asked for assistance to lift that manhole cover, tree stump, piece of equipment, detour sign, road kill or whatever than no problem ..... but they rarely do and an avoidable injury and expensive injury can result! Attached is a photo of a small hydro-electric crane that was sold to a local fire department so that a single employee can lift what is required without the need for a second pair of hands (and back). These Italian manufactured compact cranes by "Maxilift" are inexpensive (certainly compared to an average workers annual wages and benefits or even a moderate WSIB claim), available in a broad range of sizes and configurations to suit almost every application (manual or hydraulic slewing/extensions and capacities ranging from 7,400 ft-lbs up to 24,350 ft-lbs), are easy to install (simply bolt it down to something solid and connect to battery) and have a broad range of accessories (stabilizer legs, remote controls, safety systems, grapples and other end of arm lifting attachments). If you are a municipality, private enterprise, on-truck application or off, if your employees are required to regularly lift items that are just a little too heavy for one person consider Maxilift .... It may just save you the wages and benefits of an extra employee(s) and/or a costly WSIB claim. |
