David O'Brien to Present The Leader As A Coach Workshop  

 

As part of David's ongoing partnership with the CT Association of Nonprofits, he will be delivering his very popular, Leader As A Coach workshop on Monday, August 22, 2011 at the CAN offices in Hartford, CT. The three-hour program is designed to provide participants with an opportunity to evaluate their current coaching capacity while exploring a wide range of coaching insights that help foster a pro-active development environment. From building a skill baseline to exploring the links to long term success, the program provides leaders with an actionable framework for improving the employee development process. The 9:00 a.m. to 12-noon workshop is open to the public but registration is required. Welcome to the summer 2011 edition of the Leadership Compass. Although the long cold winter seemed like it would never end, it is now just a memory. With the new season comes a wonderful opportunity to take a well-deserved break from the rigors of work.  Despite the absence of a formal summer vacation itinerary, I am committed to making the time to really enjoy friends and family which for me helps to recharge my creative and intellectual batteries.

THINK, Exploring The Value of Think Time 

 

Critical ThinkingWhen was the last time you really took the time to think? If you're like most busy leaders I know, you probably said just a few minutes ago or possibly only a few hours ago. You might even be quick to respond that you're thinking right now as you read these words. If I had been asked this question only a year or two ago, I would have likely responded the same way. I might have even been annoyed by such an inquiry. After all, as leaders we get paid to think. While there is a great deal of truth to this, the deeper truth is that few of us rarely take the time to think about an issue for more than a few seconds or minutes. There are of course exceptions but more times than not today's multi-tasking leader races through the thinking process in the name of efficiency.
 

To be sure, success in any worthwhile endeavor demands good thinking. To move forward as leaders, we must be willing and able to analyze information accurately, anticipate the consequences of options and to draw reasonable conclusions.  We also need to be able to explain our points of view by providing good reasons and at times, solid evidence.  Not surprisingly, all of this takes more than a few seconds or minutes to ensure a successful outcome.  By my estimation it takes even more than what is commonly referred to as

The Leader As A Coach 

CoachingToday more than ever before, leaders at all levels are called to continuously develop their team's capacity to succeed. Often, a key differentiator between high performing teams and others is the leader's ability to effectively address the coaching and development needs of employees.
