Message from the Chair
I am delighted to report that the WVCCS inaugural Pumpkin Fest event was an outstanding success! Blue skies and sunshine prevailed, and we had everyone from tiny tots picking out their own pumpkin, families golfing and dancing, teenagers taking home the Crystal Pumpkin for Best Scarecrow, grandparents enjoying a skate with the grandkids, to seniors teaching people of all ages how to quilt, play billiards, or make apple cider. Pumpkin Fest met a need in our community for an intergenerational event, with friends, family and neighbours getting together to enjoy time with each other and celebrate the harvest season in a fun and affordable way. Thank you to everyone who joined us over the weekend and helped to make the first Pumpkin Fest such a wonderful event!
Through our various fundraising activities, the Society is funding the 2012 Best Buddies Summer Program - a new program activated through an outside grant to the Society in 2011. The program provides a volunteer leadership and training experience to older youth volunteers, to enable them to provide extra support to school-age campers who typically experience barriers to participation in District of West Vancouver summer camp programs. The Society is also purchasing and installing a new Access Lift for a Change Room at the Aquatic Centre, and six new spin bicycles for the Weight Room. The Society purchased a new projector for the Community Centre Atrium early in the Fall and, together with the large screen purchased in 2010 by the Society, visitors to the Centre now enjoy sports events and monthly film showings.
As we move into 2012, I look forward to further opportunities to meet with you, and to bring added benefit and programming to the West Vancouver Community and Aquatic Centres, as we work to ensure our Community Centre is truly a `Centre of Excellence`.
On behalf of the WVCCS Board, I wish you all Happy Holidays and a prosperous New Year!

..... You Belong Here!

Message from Executive Director |
The Christmas Craft Fair was once again a success with over 50 vendor tables ladened with Christmas gifts and decorations filling the Community Centre. Early Christmas shoppers took advantage of the opportunity to buy that special gift amid a festive atmosphere. I would like to thank the Community Centre Staff for their support of this annual event. As we head into the festive season, I hope that you will participate in the many activities offered at the Community and Aquatic Centres, and celebrate with us at this wonderful time of year. This newsletter is packed full of information on upcoming events, and I encourage you all to check out the Holiday Happenings Guide offered online this year. Our Staff have worked hard to bring a wide variety of programs and opportunities for each and every one of you throughout this season. Sue Ketler Executive Director |

Parking Changes Coming Soon! |
Construction has begun on the Pacific Arbour Seniors' Housing Project on Marine Drive. This is an exciting project which will bring much-needed quality seniors' housing to West Vancouver. With this construction comes changes to parking at the Community Centre. The Wetmore parking lot has now been permanently closed. In addition, the westbound curb lane of Marine Drive between 22nd and Gordon will be closed to allow for staging of construction vehicles. As the project advances, there will be changes to traffic patterns on Marine Drive, so please visit www.westvancouver.ca/parking for up-to-date information. Parking Information |

 STAFF PROFILE: VANESSA TONG |

VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR
My name is Vanessa Tong and I am very excited to be the new Volunteer Coordinator for Parks & Community Services, District of West Vancouver, at the Community Centre. My office is located on the Main Floor - please pop by and say hello!
Through my 10 years of service in the Parks and Recreation field, I have worked as a Parks Program Coordinator and a Youth Coordinator in both Richmond and Vancouver. I enjoy recreation programming, special event coordination and most definitely, the community engagement that comes along with it. I value community development very much. I have always believed in the power of volunteerism because volunteering can help discover, inspire and create a better self and community. I am very excited to learn how we can connect and utilize the skills of our volunteers, in which we can continue to enhance the quality of programming at West Vancouver Community Centre.
Fun facts about me... I am only 5"1 but I love to play basketball. I currently play in two co-ed leagues in Richmond and Vancouver. I also have a 13" Beagle named Bagel. If you visit my office, you will see many pictures of him!
Thank you very much for having me be a part of the West Vancouver team! I look forward to meeting and working together with all of you.
