Letter from the Principal
Greetings from cyber-land!! We are extremely excited to "email" our newsletter for the first time! District 118 continues our commitment to improve communication with parents in the fast paced, ever changing world. Online newsletters are a wonderful way to save a significant amount of paper, while still ensuring that families are kept up-to-date on the "happenings" at South.
It is hard to believe that Spring has sprung and we are already making preparations for the end of the year activities. Please check the important dates link for valuable information about upcoming events. As a reminder, we also update our daily announcements page at www.palos118.org/South everyday with new events and activities.
I would like to highlight three noteworthy items that South is particularly proud of this spring:
- Once again, Palos South received the Academic Excellence Award by the state board of education for the 2009-2010 school year. Palos South was one of only 151 middle schools in the entire state of Illinois to receive this prestigious recognition. As part of the criteria for earning the award, over ninety percent of our students met or exceeded state standards in both mathematics and reading over the last three years.
- On April 13, all 5th graders from both Palos East and West spent the day at South for our first Step Up Day. The students toured the building with 8th grade Pacesetters, listened to presentations from administration and students, watched our band and choir perform, and perused our extracurricular offerings. It was a wonderful, informational day for all!!
- Huge kudos go out to our math department and our students for their efforts in raising money for St. Jude Children's Hospital. Our school once again participated in a math-a-thon to benefit the hospital. 134 students took part raising $7314.55. Over the last 5 years we have collected approximately $47,000 for this worthwhile cause.
As always, contact us with any questions or concerns! We look forward to a strong finish to what has been an amazing school year.
Sincerely, Chris Bingen Amy Christie Principal Assistant Principal
