GOLS Updatesgols

David Harper and Brad Cooper have been active in community outreach in the Upstate in the first quarter of 2012. In January, David participated in the first planning meeting for a Trails Advisory Committee in Spartanburg County, hosted by Partners for Active Living.

The groups consisted of a wide range of City, County, non-profit and for-profit representatives, all sharing a common interest in developing short-term projects to advance the growing network of trails and greenways in the county, centered around the Hub City Connector of the Palmetto Trail. David will participate as a Committee member.

David presented a well-received talk at the February meeting of the Rotary Club of Spartanburg about the role of PCF and GOLS in developing outdoor recreation opportunities as community assets. David and Brad both presented another well-received talk on the same topic at the February meeting of the Rotary Club of Inman, just north of Spartanburg. Wherever we share our projects and results with audiences in the communities

New Outdoor Showers

we work in, the overall reaction is "thank you for doing what you do!"

Finally, we have upgraded and remodeled the bathrooms

at GOLS by adding an additional two new toilets and four new indoor showers plus two outdoor showers.  This greatly improves our overnight accommodations and will open up new possibilities for GOLS events and programming.

Visit the GOLS website for more info.

Art on the Trail
Art on the Trail

That's right. Palmetto Conservation and local arts organization Pocket Productions are launching an exciting new art series in 2012. Art on the Trail is a seasonal series of environmental art installations and events we are planning along the Palmetto Trail across the state.

One event and installation will be held each season: Spring in the Midlands; Summer in Spartanburg; Fall in the Pee Dee River; and Winter in the Lowcountry. Each event will include an opening dinner and walking tour of the installations with the artists. Our main kick-off event will be held by the Broad River trestle on the Peak-to-Prosperity Passage of the Palmetto Trail on Saturday, May 26. We will host a preview event in Columbia on May 11, including installations, meetings with artists, and a screening of Rivers and Tides, an inspiring film about the pioneering work of Scottish environmental artist Andy Goldsworthy.

Please join us for this important first step bringing together those interested in the arts and outdoor recreation. It is our sincere hope that all participants will be inspired to get out on the trail and experience the great beauty and diversity of the Palmetto State with new eyes. Check our website for updates.
