Adventures from the Trail
Boy Scout Troop Earns 50-Miler Patch on
the Palmetto Trail

    Troop 9212

The 14 boys and 7 adults from Troop 9212 of Summerville, SC left at 6 a.m. Monday, December 26, for a backpacking adventure that covered four different ecosystems along the Swamp Fox Passage of the Palmetto Trail.  This section of trail runs through the Francis Marion National Forest.  The group hiked 51.4 miles in 5 days.  Troop 9212Along the way the boys earned merit badges for orienteering, camping, backpacking, woodcarving, astronomy and geocaching. They also completed conservation projects.  The troop along with their dedicated parents have been planning this trip for about a year. The boys carried their own packs, cooked their own meals, and set up and took down their tents and hammocks each day.  They endured the cold, wind, and rain, but each of them finished with a new sense of pride and accomplishment.  The Troop plans to hike the rest of the Palmetto Trail and a section of the Appalachian Trail in 2012.
We'd like to congratulate Troop 9212 and wish them good luck in completing the rest of the Palmetto Trail.

Morgan's Victory March

January 14, 2012

8am

March back in history 231 years along the same route where General Daniel Morgan gathered his "Flying Army" and planned the great victory at Cowpens. Back then the Americans had many worries and tension as Tarleton's British army pushed them to either fight or surrender the back country of the Carolinas.

On our January 14, 2012 tour, we'll have fun reliving Morgan's miracle of gathering his force together during the two-day race with the enemy while also planning how to use his variety of soldiers to win a great victory at a place called the Cowpens. The marchers will see some beautiful country from Grindal Shoals to Cowpens battlefield. What a great way to get the feelings of how the weather, natural conditions, and distance helped shape how the battle turned out!

Marchers should pre-register for the tour with the Town of Pacolet by calling (864)474-9504 or email eharris@townofpacolet.com
