near Arroyo Grande, CA - September 10 & 11th, 2011 -

As part of the annual Long Dance hosted by Circles of Empowerment, and as a special offering this year to our extended community, we are offering a chance to learn how to put up tipis and build a Sweat Lodge out of sustainably harvested willow.

This will take place during the weekend long event known as Village Building on September 10th & 11th, when members of the Circles of Empowerment community gather to build the sacred circle and site for the annual Long Dance, now in its twenty-first year.

This is an ideal learning experience for those interested in outdoor skills, sustainable land use, Native American traditions, permaculture and community activities for young and old alike.  Clan Mother Hua Anwa and Elder Bonnie Jade Bracken will offer teachings about the practical and traditional lore of these iconic and sacred structures.  Jade will also teach us about Tipi painting!

To attend this event,  Register Now .  Directions are  included in the information packet on Village Building which you will receive once your register.  Call Hawk at 805 801 2911 for more info.

Come Prepared to Work Hard & Have Fun!

old lakota sweat lodge Have you always longed to live free on the land and celebrate the seasons as they gently turn?  Do you wish you knew how to make a shelter no matter the circumstance?  This is your chance to develop these invaluable skills and pass them forward to the next generations.

We will raise approximately five Tipis, demonstrating the way to put on the skin and close up one of these five.  We will also build a large "animal lodge" made entirely from sustainably harvested willow.  This will be covered at a later date, but all the necessary details will be explained as part of the teaching.

Bring your family, plenty of water, lunch, snacks, sunscreen, chairs, hats and work gloves if you've got them.  Our Village Building Weekend begins early on Saturday morning with a sacred prayer circle and continues early the next day until evening.  You can come for a few hours or you can join us for both days.  There's plenty to do and learn!

Participants in Village Building are welcome to join us in Community on Friday September 23 rd when we gather for a Sacred Pipe Ceremony (noon - 2 pm), Forums (2:30 - 3:30), Drum Workshop (4 - 5:30), Potluck Dinner (6:30) and a Concert with several Guest Artists (7:30 - 9:30).  See "What to Expect" at our Long Dance website for more information about Community events.
