Dear Friend,

Summertime is almost here.  With warmer temperatures, the beaches and pools become even more attractive.  This is a great time to visit Venice.  Accommodations are great and every place is less crowded.

In this edition, we focus on Venice, as the "Sharks Tooth Capital of the World" and we take a look at Venice and the North Jetty & South Jetty Beaches.  We also provide five helpful tips for working with a home remodeling contractor when performing home improvements.

We hope you enjoy this little bit of news... and that you will continue to welcome us into your email box, monthly.

Venice: The Shark Tooth Capital of the World

searching for treasuresThere is a reason that Venice, Florida is known as the Shark Tooth Capital of the World.  It is one of the best places in the world to search for fossilized sharks' teeth.

Sharks actually shed their teeth and grow new ones, and may shed thousands of teeth in their lifetime. Thousands of these specimens wash up onto the sandy Venice Beaches. When sharks die and decompose, the teeth are the only remnants as the remainder of the shark decomposes completely, even its skeleton which is made of cartilage, not bone.

Walking on the beach and searching for shark teeth is a relaxing and interesting pastime.   Children of all ages have a natural interest in science and this is a wonderful way for adults and children to enjoy the beach together.   It is easy to search for shark teeth, and with just a few bits of information, you can turn your walk on the beach into an exploration of archeology.

Travel west on Venice Avenue and you will eventually come to Venice Beach.  This beautiful stretch of sand offers an environment for pure enjoyment.

Shell picking and searching for shark teeth make a stroll on the beach fun and interesting.  Off the coast (about a quarter of a mile) is a reef which contains many fossils and is a favorite diving spot.

Amenities include:

  • A pavilion
  • Rest rooms
  • Concession
  • Picnic tables
  • Volleyball court

Travel north from Venice Beach and visit the North Jetty and South Jetty Beaches.  The Jetties are a favorite fishing spot and wonderful to walk.  The North Jetty Beach offers some of the area's best surfing.  The Jetties are a wonderful place to picnic and to watch the boats, the birds and the people.  The Intracoastal Waterway rushes with the tides between the North and South Jetties.  This is a wonderful place to view the sunset!

5 Tips for Working With Your
Home Remodeling Contractor

home-remodeling-contractorMaking improvements to your property is a great way of better positioning your property for sale.  But whether you are remodeling for your own enjoyment or to sell your home, here are a few items to keep in mind.

  1. Select your contractor carefully:  Check references thoroughly, and view some of his prior work.  Confirm that he is licensed with the state and/or county, and check with the Chamber of Commerce and Better Business Bureau to ensure that he is in good standing.

  2. Obtain a Solid Contract:  Make sure that the start date and end date are clearly stated.  Specify how change orders will be handled.  Be sure to indemnify yourself if the contractor fails to follow code.  Clearly state that the contractor will be responsible for cleanup and any damages that occur to your property during the job.

Florida Friendly Gardens:  Royal Poinciana
Each month we introduce you to a "Florida Friendly" plant or flower.

Royal PoincianaThere is no mistaking the beautiful, dramatic, flame-red Royal Poinciana tree.

At this time (spring to early summer) they can be seen in full bloom with their graceful canopy.

If you have a generous yard, this tree can occupy a place of honor, but it does require space.  At a mature height it will reach 35-40 feet high and can reach 40 feet wide.

It is best planted during the beginning of the rainy season (early summer) and should be watered daily.  In early spring, apply fertilizer.  There is also a golden-yellow variety of this true southern gem.

For more information on this and other "Florida Friendly" plants, visit www.FloridaYards.org.
