Providing Help During Life's Most Difficult Moments.

The many services of Tidewell Hospice are very relevant to all of our lives.  Tidewell Hospice has a saying, "When quantity of time is no longer possible, TideWell Hospice's focus is quality - making the most of the time that remains."
Many people may be familiar with the assistance they provide to patients with advanced illnesses and their families, but as we researched this article we were amazed at the wide range of services provided by Tidewell Hospice to our community since their founding in 1980.

There are Hospice Houses located in seven of our communities: Arcadia, Bradenton, Ellenton, Englewood, Port Charlotte, Sarasota and Venice.  At these skilled nursing facilities, families can spend time together in a warm homelike atmosphere with each other, and yet at the same time benefit from the supportive professional and volunteer staff.

Adjoining each of these houses is a staff center from which the additional outreach programs are conducted.  In addition to the palliative care, Tidewell Hospice also provides a range of support programs to assist those who are facing a progressive illness, and those who are grieving.

Exploring the Venice Trails
Legacy Trail
Venice is blessed with an extensive trail system for biking, walking and roller-blading.  Venice Waterway Park extends along the intracoastal waterway - five miles on each side.  It begins at the Shamrock Park and Nature Center and flows into the Legacy Trail on the eastern side of the waterway.  Following these two trails, one may explore the beautiful scenery and abundant wildlife of Venice.  They are truly treasures for all to enjoy.

Florida Friendly Gardens:  The Bird of Paradise
Each month we introduce you to a "Florida Friendly" plant or flower.

Bird of ParadiseThe scientific name for Bird of Paradise is "Strelitzia Reginae".  This is an strikingly beautiful flowering perennial.
They make a wonderful cut flower for bringing to arrangements indoors, but require a bit of extra care to be at their best.

Planting should  be done in the warm season: May through mid-summer.  Their root system is tuberous, and they should be planted in peat moss or manure, but not too deeply.  They require good drainage and feeding.  It is best to fertilize with a 6-6-6 mixture.

They can be a bit vulnerable to scale, and should be treated with an insecticide if that occurs.

For more information on this and other "Florida Friendly" plants, visit www.FloridaYards.org.
