Explore the Changing Season: Summer Delights |
"To see the Summer Sky Is Poetry, though never in a Book it lie"
-Emily Dickinson
Summer is in full swing! It's warm outside, the grass is green, the sun is shining, the birds are chirping and the flowers look colorful and beautiful. Hopefully everyone has been able to get out and enjoy the warm weather. There are so many fun activities that matches can do outside in the summertime. Why not spend a day at a local park? Go on a bike ride! Or rent a canoe for the day. Go fishing (see ideas for how to fish and create your own fishing pole in this newsletter)! Plant some flowers or a small vegetable garden! Go on a nature walk or go swimming. Summer is a great time to get to know each other better, learn a new task together, and have fun and grow together! Make sure you check out the rest of our newsletter for lots of great ideas and then get out and enjoy the summer weather with your mentee!

Register now for 4-H Mentoring Weekend! | Picture yourself here and make sure to reserve your spot at the 4th annual 4-H Mentoring Weekend, July 22nd through 24th at the Kettunen Center in Tustin, MI!
4-H Mentoring Weekend brings together mentoring matches from programs around the state for a weekend that is sure to be the highlight of the summer for you and your mentee.
"The best thing was hanging out with Juan and getting to be ourselves," Mike (pictured at left), a mentor with the Clinton County 4-H Youth Mentoring Creating Connections Program said. "It was also the first time Juan and I had worked together as a team-it was cool to do that together. When I signed up for the weekend I was a little hesitant at first, but it was one of my most memorable experiences this summer."
There are many fun and educational options that you and your mentee can choose from throughout the weekend to form your own adventure. Explore the Kettunen Center's trails with a guided night hike, eat s'mores by the campfire, or both! Choose from the many workshop options to create your own unique experience throughout the weekend--from the always popular Jell-O Wars, to Salsa Gardening (where you will learn how to make your own salsa), to Archery and more! You and your mentee can also try out your journalistic side with our brand new 4-H Mentoring Weekend Press Corps and receive a special press pass to learn how to photograph and record an event.
"The Jell-O war was my favorite," Juan, Mike's mentee, said. "We filled four buckets and when the whistle blew we had to throw Jell-O at one another. The one who was most covered in Jell-O got a prize! I also enjoyed meeting new people. I've talked to new friends and plan to go again next year." The registration deadline has been extended to Friday, July 8th. You can find the registration packet here.

Thinking Ahead: Tips for School Success
| Does your mentee struggle with classes and school work? Michigan 4-H Youth Mentoring has developed a new video series called "Tips for School Success", designed to assist mentors with understanding different learning styles that mentees may possess and how to utilize strategies to help promote school success in youth.
The first video in the series walks you through Howard Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences and different strategies to help your mentee achieve for success in school depending on their strengths. For example, your mentee might be a bodily-kinesthetic learner if he/she uses their body in whole or in part to solve problems or enjoys touching objects to observe them. He/she might understand algebra equations if he/she is able to practice physically moving objects from one side of an equation to the other. To view the video, visit http://youtu.be/y_hufexnyfQ.
Stay updated on future videos from this series by following our YouTube channel, mi4hmentor, or by "liking" our Facebook page. |
Activity Idea: Fishing
|
If you would like to pilot these activities or other 4-H Guided Adventures curricula, please contact Kristy Oosterhouse at oosterh6@msu.edu.
Fishing is a fun and easy activity that can lead to great conversation and amazing memories. If you would like to go fishing with your mentee, follow these few steps to get you started! First, purchase a Michigan fishing license for you and your mentee (licenses are not mandatory for youth under 16, but every $2 voluntary youth license brings $10 of federal money back to Michigan). Keep your fishing license with you while fishing. Pick up the DNRE Michigan Fishing Guide as well, which contains regulations on species, seasons, and other important information. Choose a location to fish and grab your fishing pole (possibly using the craft below to make your own!). If you are using a store-bought rod or pole, learn the different parts of the pole and what purpose each part serves.
When you are ready to start fishing, grab your pole and bait (worms, crickets, night crawlers, etc) and head to your spot! Cast the line into the water and wait for a bite. If you see signs of a bite (the bobber wiggles, moves, or disappears), you must 'set the hook' by reeling up the slack in the line and quickly sweep the rod upward. Once the hook is set, you can reel the fish in!
