Explore the Changing Season: Step into Spring! |
"Today is the day when bold kites fly,
When cumulus clouds roar across the sky.
When robins return, when children cheer,
When light rain beckons spring to appear.
Today is the day when daffodils bloom,
Which children pick to fill the room,
Today is the day when grasses green,
When leaves burst forth for spring to be seen."
-Robert McCracken, Spring
Spring is in the air! Warmer weather is on its way, which means that the green things are beginning to grow again and birds are singing. March 20th signals the first day of spring. If you and your mentee are itching to get outside after spending winter doing indoor activities, check out the President's Challenge below to get moving! Spring is also the perfect time to start planting flowers, herbs, and vegetables for the summer. Visit a local community garden and watch as it transforms from its wintertime slumber into beautiful green plants--or start your own plants in containers! You could even bake cupcakes and decorate them to represent your favorite things about spring--green grass, pretty flowers, or singing birds!
Springtime Cupcakes
Ingredients
1 cup white sugar
1/2 cup butter
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 & 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 & 3/4 teaspoons baking powder
3/4 cup milk
Directions
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line a muffin pan with paper liners. In a medium bowl, cream together the sugar and butter. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then stir in the vanilla. Combine the flour and baking powder and add to the creamed mixture, mixing well. Stir in the milk until the batter is smooth. Pour or spoon batter into the muffin cups. Bake for 20-25 minutes.
After the cupcakes are cooled, its time to decorate them! Use your imagination--use green frosting and jelly beans to make a nest, try designing a flower with the frosting, or top the cupcakes with a Peep! |

Thinking Ahead: CareerShip
| Does your mentee know what career path they want to follow? Help them explore different career options by using CareerShip to determine the knowledge, skills, and tasks that may be used. CareerShip is a free online resource for exploring different careers. CareerShip was created by MappingYourFuture, a website that provides free career, college, financial aid and other resources.
On the website, you can walk your mentee through a variety of resources about each career. The website will list the different tasks that a professional in each career might perform, the education, training or experience needed for the career, and different areas and topics of interest, knowledge and skills that the career uses. CareerShip also links each career to a website that will list wages nationwide and in a particular state, as well as further resources for more information about the career.
You can use the website to explore careers by category with your mentee. For example, if your mentee is interested in art, you could explore careers related to craft artists, art directors, fashion designers, photographers, and more. Exploring the different tasks, knowledge, and skills needed for each career may help your mentee to know which skills to develop to follow that career.

Match Highlight: Steve and Nick |
Article submitted by Rachel Calcaterra, Program Educator with Macomb County 4-H Youth Mentor Program, Macomb County MSU Extension.
Steve Monteleone, Macomb County MSUE 4-H Mentor, has been awarded the 2010
4-H Mentor of the Year. Steve has been a mentor since 2008 and has volunteered over 250 hours with the program. He is currently matched with Nick, they have been together almost 2 years. Nick started acting out in school and getting into minor trouble so it was recommended by his prevention worker that he be matched with a mentor. He did not have any male role models in his life. Nick and Steve hit it off instantly. Since the time of the match, Nick has started to show more responsibility for his actions and is doing well in school, as well as in the Junior Marines. Steve feels that he has gained a lot out of his relationship with Nick as well. They meet regularly and they have a great time together. For more information about the Macomb County 4-H Youth Mentor Program, contact Rachel Calcaterra at (586)783-8163 or Rachel.Calcaterra@macombcountymi.gov. |
Seasonal Craft: Planting Seeds
|
Now is the perfect time to start your summer garden! You can sprout your plants from seed indoors and watch them grow into full, leafy plants. Herbs, such as parsley, basil, catnip for your feline friends, or chives are great plants to start from seed. If you don't have land to plant outdoors, start a container garden with your mentee! Use the mini-greenhouse idea below to get your garden off and running. Mini-greenhouse Materials Clear, 2-Liter Soda Bottle Small flowerpot Potting Soil Seeds Saucer Craft Stick Marker (optional) Instructions Wash out and cut the top off of the soda bottle. Make sure that the flowerpot fits inside the soda bottle. Fill the flowerpot with potting soil, then plant the seeds according to the package directions. Place the pot on the saucer and poke in the labeled marker if you are using one to identify what the plant is. Water the soil and then put the bottle over the pot. Make sure to water the soil if it looks dry. After the plant has sprouted, set near a window. Once the plant is large enough, transfer to a larger container or plant outside once weather permits. |
