January is National and Michigan's Mentoring Month!
Mentoring Month is a time to celebrate and spotlight the importance of being a mentor and the need of children to have a caring adult in their lives.  In celebration of National Mentoring Month, we would like to highlight some of the events that 4-H Youth Mentoring programs are holding around the state.

Celebrating the Magic of Mentoring with the Ottawa County Mentoring Collaborative

ocmc magicThe Ottawa County Mentoring Collaborative (OCMC) has a lot of exciting events happening in January for National Mentoring Month.  We'll be kicking off our efforts with our 5th annual Magic of Mentoring Celebration. This event is to thank local mentors, mentees and partners for sharing their time, talents and treasures through mentoring, as well as to increase awareness for the need of mentors in the Ottawa county area. This year we are thrilled to give the event a new and entertaining feel by featuring wandering performers, a sundae bar, a silent auction and a photo booth in addition to the awards celebration. The Magic of Mentoring Celebration will be held at the Faith Reformed Church in Zeeland on January 18, 2011. Doors open at 5:45pm and mentors, youth, families, supporters and guests are all invited to join us. Please RSVP to Anne at (616)-994-4580 or asulliva@msu.edu.

The Grand Rapids Griffins have invited OCMC matches to watch them take on the Chicago Wolves!  We'll be heading to the game on Saturday, January 22 for a fun filled evening of hockey, snacks and fun in Grand Rapids.

The OCMC will be teaming up with the Muskegon Observatory to offer matches the opportunity to view the night sky.  On January 29th from 6-9pm matches are invited to the Muskegon Observatory to look at the planet Jupiter and the constellations of Orion, Taurus and Pleiades.  Matches will also get the chance to use the Observatory telescopes to see nebulas, clusters and other galaxies that can't be seen by the naked eye.

Celebrate mentoring in Eaton and Ingham Counties with STOMP 4-H Youth Mentoring

stomp mentor & menteeSTOMP 4-H Youth Mentoring is having an open house at Fay's Evelyn Bay Coffee Company in Charlotte on Friday, January 28th, from 6pm to 8pm.  Sit down and enjoy a meal with the cafe's delicious food and be entertained by the Dusty String Duo, an acoustic group that presents a tight yet relaxed set of original and traditional folk, old time and bluegrass songs.  Learn about mentoring in Eaton County and the growth of the program into Ingham County.  The evening will highlight current mentors in the program and will be the perfect opportunity to talk with mentors and mentees about how mentoring has impacted their lives.  There will also be a silent auction; proceeds will go towards supporting matches in the program.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

January 17thMLK Day

Instead of taking a day off, spend a day serving the community.  If there aren't any events in your area, why not plan a service activity with matches in your program?  A service activity can be as simple as picking up trash along the roadside or volunteering together in your community.

Thank Your Mentor Day, January 25th

Be sure to tell your mentees and their parents about Thank Your Mentor Day.  Many programs plan a group gathering to celebrate the day.  Many site-based programs work with youth to create cards or other tokens for youth to give to their mentors.  Other programs send a note to parents letting them know about the date and sharing some ideas to make the day special.  Whatever you do, be sure to thank the mentors in your program on January 25th!

PistonsMentoring Night at the Palace, January 22nd

Come celebrate mentoring with the Detroit Pistons and the Palace at Auburn Hills!!  The first ever "Mentoring Night at the Palace" will take place on Saturday, January 22nd at 7:30pm as the Pistons take on the Phoenix Suns.  A special emphasis on mentoring will be present throughout the evening.

You can purchase tickets now for the January 22nd game at a discounted rate.  For every ticket sold through this website, Mentor Michigan will receive $5.  The money raised from the event will be distributed through a statewide funding opportunity at a later date in the form of Detroit Pistons mini-grants.  Please note that when purchasing tickets, you will need to use the keyword "mentor".

This is a great opportunity to engage your matches, program staff, family and/or friends in an evening out with the Detroit Pistons!  You won't want to miss this awesome opportunity to highlight mentoring in Michigan!  For more information about "Mentoring Night at the Palace", visit www.mentormichigan.org.
