Journey 4-H Youth Mentoring

Article submitted by Jenna Converse, AmeriCorps Member, Journey 4-H Youth Mentoring

Journey Fall HarvestBeing able to drink hot apple cider, roast hot dogs, and make s'mores around a bonfire is something some of us may take for granted.  Many mentors are surprised to learn that their mentees have never experienced this fall tradition.  This past month, matches from Journey 4-H Youth Mentoring in Ottawa County were able to go on a hayride and enjoy a bonfire at Rolling Acres Farm in Conklin, MI.  The farm is owned by Bill Miller, one of our volunteers and he goes all out for us every year, providing a hayride through his orchard, a large bonfire, hot apple cider, and pumpkins for matches to take home.  The mentors and mentees were able to make s'mores and roast hot dogs, something many of them do not get the chance to do that often or even at all.  They had a good time trying to cook hot dogs on the huge fire, but Bill is a pro and had a smaller fire going that was easier to roast the goodies.  The s'mores turned out great!  We used the giant marshmallows and had some fun laughing at everyone trying to fit them in their mouths!

Bill began hosting this annual event with Journey 4-H ten years ago and has opened it up for all local mentoring programs in the Ottawa County Mentoring Collaborative for 8 years. An exciting piece of news from the event is that a local TV news station came out to do a special story on mentoring.  If you live in the West Michigan area, look for that story to air on FOX 17 News at 6 on November 18th!  Even if you aren't able to watch it when it airs, look for the link to the story on Journey 4-H's Facebook page, which also has pictures and video of the event as well.

MSUDid you know that, according to the U.S. Department of Education, eight out of 10 youth, of all socio-economic groups, expect to attain a bachelor's degree or higher?  Despite their aspirations, however, studies show that many low-income students or those who are first in their families to pursue higher education often lack the guidance they need to prepare for post-secondary education.

KnowHow2GO is a great resource that provides information on preparing for college for middle school through high school students.  The website discusses why it is important to think about college at each step and outlines different topics to consider.  For example, youth in their freshman year of high school have the perfect opportunity to start exploring all of the different options for post-secondary education.  There are even resources for mentors to use, including a workbook that can be used by mentors and mentees together to help with preparing for college.
