What is 4-H Mentoring Weekend?
Canoeing
4-H Mentoring Weekend brings together members of the mentoring
community from across the state of Michigan for a weekend of fun, learning, laughter, and
memories at Kettunen Center in Tustin, MI. The weekend offers a variety of activities and each match can build their perfect weekend by choosing the activities and learning opportunities that are most interesting to them.
Who can attend?
You do not have to be part of a 4-H mentoring program to attend this event- matches from other formal mentoring programs are welcome! This weekend is open to mentees who are 11 to 19 years of age by July 17, 2010, per 4-H overnight policy standards. Volunteers in attendance must have completed a volunteer screening process through their mentoring program which includes a criminal background check. This weekend is designed for mentoring program matches to participate in together.  For this reason, mentors and mentees sign up for the same activities and should plan to spend the majority of the weekend together.  AmeriCorps members serve as volunteer staff and will serve as floor monitors and chaperones for youth during the overnight hours.
What will we do?
The 4-H Mentoring Weekend 3 team has worked hard to makegroup shot sure that there is something for everyone!  The weekend starts out with the Amazing Mentoring Race where matches will race to complete a series of small tasks-- and on the way they will receive fun prizes.  Following the challenge, there will be a campfire and s'mores.  Saturday and Sunday mornings there will be interactive mentor training sessions for mentors and mentees will have fun learning about food and nutrition. Throughout the weekend, matches will select from a variety of workshops and have the opportunity to explore Kettunen Center, tie dye their t-shirts, and engage in a community service project.  Workshops that will be offered during the weekend include:
  • Archery
  • Catch and Release Fishing
  • Geocahing and Orienteering
  • Rock Wall Climbing
  • Kite Building
  • Health Bites with SGT. Sadler
  • Crafty Containers
