In our last email we provided six steps to help you move your business to the next level in 2012. For the next couple of months I am going to expand on each of those six steps.

 

Step #1 - Take a critical look at your business and analyze what did and didn't occur in your business in 2011. Then identify what worked and was profitable and what didn't work and wasn't profitable.

 

When analyzing your business the most important thing is to be honest with yourself. Many entrepreneurs put themselves in financial distress because they either cannot or will not see and accept what is right in front of them. You cannot fix anything until you identify it, so if you are too close financially or emotionally to see, hire a qualified consultant to see for you. This will save you a lot of time and money in the long run. It is when you say, "I cannot afford to hire a consultant," that you are in most need of one. Keep in mind that your financial future is at risk.

  • Review your business vision and determine if your vision is still the same or if you need to change it. Your vision is the largest piece of your businesses foundation. Without vision, a company struggles to grow past the start-up phase. If you do not haveyour business vision written, you have violated a fundamental business law of success. Whether you realize it or not, you are in charge of your businesses reality. You are the captain of the ship. You are the one who initiates or stops progress. Your progress is directly affected by the decisions you make.

 

It is human nature to be afraid of the unknown. As a business owner, you walk in unknown waters every day. You may postpone making decisions for fear of making the wrong decision or even fear of success. However, if you make a wrong decision, you have the power to change it. There is an old song that says, "If you choose not to decide you still have made a choice." When you decline making a decision, you actually have made one. You have decided to be stagnant. You have decided not to grow.

 

Many entrepreneurs make this decision out of a fear of success, rather than a fear of failure. The prospect of success can be frightening because success requires risk and effort. Success requires that time and resources be spent developing an infrastructure to support growth. Fear of this undertaking keeps many entrepreneurs broke for years until it eventually puts them out of business.
