Spirit of Compassion Drives Record Achievement
by Elizabeth White

We are truly most remarkable together.  In a year of unprecedented economic times, the Galveston County Mainland Communities United Way successfully completed its campaign by raising a record $2.4 million to help social services agencies all over the mainland.

The story today is not really the amount of money raised.  It is the 646 campaign volunteers who tirelessly led the march toward what some would call a lofty goal, especially in a year following the devastation caused by Hurricane Ike in our county.

The real story is the resolve and enthusiasm we've witnessed by our old friends who dug deeper than ever before.  Special thanks to all who participated from BP, City of Texas City, College of the Mainland, Dow, Santa Fe ISD, and Valero for raising more money this year.  For they know that we are most remarkable together.

More of the story is the new friends we've attained this year.  People at Comcast, Schwab, and Shelmark Engineering more than simply believe in our work.  They joined the campaign for the first time, and we are grateful to have their support. They, too, know that we are most remarkable together.

The United Way campaign is like no other.  Last year alone, more than 1,600 volunteers provided 61,000 hours of service to United Way agencies on the mainland.  They, too, know that we are more remarkable together.  They know that no other annual drive inspires as many volunteers county-wide, while connecting residents, industry leaders, businesses and employees in a united goal - and we are most remarkable, together.

There is a feeling of community spirit, generosity, and optimism in this remarkable achievement.  Galveston County's compassion delivers hope to one in three residents who rely on the services provided by agencies funded by the United Way.  All campaign contributors gave this year to ensure that people can access the community services they need.

On behalf of our Board of Directors, volunteers, corporate and community leaders, and staff, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.  For I, too, know that we are most remarkable - together.
