VOLUME 10/9
September 2010
Featured Project:  Sheetz
(West Manheim Township)

The grand opening of the Sheetz, located in same shopping area as the Wal-Mart Superstore, is scheduled for September 30, 2010.  The new 5,000 SF convenience store will bring Sheetz's award winning made to order (MTO) food, quality gasoline at low prices, an espresso bar with MTO specialty "Coffeez" and the lowest priced cigarettes and tobacco products allowed by law to the south Hanover area.

Sheetz Engineering and Permits Project Manager, Bob Franks, says this site met the numerous demographic and site criteria for the location of a new Sheetz including it's location on the far right corner of the intersection (when approaching from downtown Hanover).  He also noted that this will be the 380th Sheetz store in the 6 state area of operation that includes Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, Ohio and North Carolina.  The Sheetz corporate goal is to open 30 new stores in Fiscal Year 2011 which begins October 1, 2011.

Hanover Land Services, Inc. project manager, Kris Raubenstine, says that the site design and approval process for this project went relatively smoothly.  The one challenging area, however, was satisfying the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) that the site entrance will be safe for motorists.  PennDOT improvements are currently under construction at the intersection of Baltimore Street (PA Rte 94) and Brunswick Drive.  A right turn lane into the shopping center will be added along Rte 94 traveling south.  A median will also be constructed at the exit from Sheetz to allow for only right turns from Brunswick Drive on to Baltimore Street.

The staff of Hanover Land Services, Inc. wishes the West Manheim Sheetz great success.  We would be glad to answer any site design related questions about this project as well.  We know that both the site and the services and products offered by Sheetz will be a valuable addition to West Manheim and the Hanover area for years to come.

FEATURED EMPLOYEE:  Keith Bortner

Keith Bortner wears a few hats at Hanover Land Services, Inc.  You may find Keith in the field working as a survey crew chief, in the office computing information for plans or a field crew, or working to maintain the company computer network.  In fact, Keith set up the Hanover Land Services, Inc.'s web site (check us out at www.hlsinc.net).  Keith shares some of his computer knowledge by answering a few questions:

What are some things to look for when considering antivirus protection for your computer?

Good antivirus software will provide frequent updates. Computer viruses are constantly being modified to circumvent detection. Having the most current virus definitions helps to avoid getting newer versions of old viruses a well as any brand new viruses.  Your antivirus software should also provide several different scanning options. It should be able to run scheduled scans (daily, weekly) as well as be able to scan emails and documents when they are being opened.

Is there anything that you can do to help protect your computer even more while on the internet?

One thing that you can do is to use a service like OpenDNS. Using OpenDNS can increase your internet connection speed while helping to protect your computer. The free service that is offered allows you to filter websites by category. You can prevent your computer from connecting to websites that are known to have viruses or security issues. For more information visit opendns.com

How can you keep costs down while continuing to have safe and current software?

You can look for open source software alternatives to some of the programs you use. Open source software is often free or a small fraction of the cost of some of the proprietary software that many people use. At Hanover Land Services, we use OpenOffice instead of Microsoft Office on some of our computers. We use Mozilla's Firefox web browser instead of Microsoft Internet Explorer and our file server and web server run the Ubuntu Linux operating system. In addition to the cost benefit, these programs are also usually more secure than their proprietary counterparts. They are updated frequently for security and to provide new features.
