Camp Discovery
Snohomish County, WA Aug. 31 - Sept. 3, 2010
The annual summer camp presented by the Epilepsy Foundation Northwest, Camp Discovery, is held the end of August each year. The Camp is located at the Camp Fire USA's Camp Killoqua on beautiful Crabapple Lake just east of Lake Goodwin in Snohomish County (Stanwood and Everett), WA. Children will experience archery, rock climbing, canoeing, hiking, swimming, arts/crafts, campfire games and much more.
The Camp is for children with epilepsy age 7-17 for which there is no charge. Siblings are also invited at a cost of $125 per child. Parents are encouraged to be Camp Counselors and participate in this life experience with their children. Other volunteers are also welcomed to help as Camp Counselors and in other capacities.

Women & Epilepsy
Tuesday, July 20th, 9am to 3:30pm at the BP Energy Center
in Anchorage.
This free workshop covers issues with
medications, hormones, puberty, pregnancy, menopause, and later life, along
with impacts on emotional and cognitive functioning, such as memory,
depression, family life, relationships, and self-esteem. Presenters include Dr.
Gail
Anderson, Professor of Pharmacology, University of Washington;
Deborah Carr, Epilepsy Foundation of America; Mary
Margaret (Mo) Hillstrand, ANP, LLC, General
Neurology, Anchorage; and Dr. Vaishali Phatak, Clinical Neuropsychologist, University
of Washington.

Northwest Run/Walk A Huge Success!
Ellie's Peeps - Portland, OR
The Northwest Run/Walk for Epilepsy took place this past
June 19 and 20 to huge success! The annual event raised over $95,000 and hosted
over 1,000 participants. The multi-city event benefits uncompensated programs
and services provided for people with epilepsy throughout the northwest.
Some 37 teams raised over $500 per team
qualifying them for prizes and helping to set new team records for most money
raised. Team Swedish Meatballs from Seattle
raised over $8,400 making them the first place team in the northwest. Highest
individual fundraising honors went to Miranda Levy of Seattle's Team Carpe Diem
raising over $5,600 for her team and the event.

4E (For Ethan) - Portland, OR Portland enjoyed a huge increase in participants with
320 registrants and bringing in over $24,000. Team Callie's Royal Court enjoyed top
team honors with over $3,200 raised and Megan Gilgen with top individual
honors with over $1,500 raised.
Team Spokane
created great awareness at Riverfront
Park raising over
$6,000 and hosting nearly 100 participants. Team Abers with Cory Plager and
Team Justin with Cinzia Escobido took top honors in Spokane.
First time event participants Tri-Cities, Anchorage and Juneau
came through with strong showings. Tri-Cities alone raised over $8,500 and
received great local media coverage to help bring awareness about epilepsy to
the community. Juneau and Anchorage also produced great media coverage
and raised over several thousand dollars to help support public education
programs.

location (see below) to support your favorite city, team or individual.

Seattle Children's Hospital
New Webpage Launched
Seattle Children's Epilepsy Program provides promising options for children with epilepsy. The program is part of the University of Washington Regional Epilepsy Center. Seattle Children's, along with other northwest epilepsy centers, is a leader in treating children diagnosed with epilepsy and those whose seizures cannot be controlled by medicines.
The Seattle Children's epilepsy team includes experts in epilepsy, neurosurgery, neuropsychology, neuroradiology and other specially trained nurses and staff. Seattle Children's Epilepsy Center is a fully functioning facility with all the latest research and treatment capabilities. For more information go to: Epilepsy Programs

I Only Have Seizures When I'm Asleep.Why?

Although many people with epilepsy
find that their seizures are affected by sleep, different individuals have very
different patterns. Some only have seizures during sleep; some only have them
when they are awake.
It's also not unusual for seizures
to be stronger if they happen during sleep. People with some types of epilepsy
often have seizures right after they wake up in the morning. With most types of
epilepsy, lack of sleep or poor sleep can trigger seizures. Read more: Article
