Arts Fund Drive Supports Innovative School Projects
Picnic table artwork
Picnic tables become art at Triangle Lake Montessori.

Carol Langohr's students at Triangle Lake Montessori have proof that picnic tables can become beautiful artwork. It just takes some paint, brushes and creativity. She used a $500 Teacher Art Grant from the High Point Area Arts Council to purchase picnic tables for the patio outside of her classroom. She had her students help paint murals inspired by famous artists in history on the table tops. Plans are in the works for her students to paint the tables again before the end of the school year.

This is just one of the many projects funded by the United Arts Council of Greater Greensboro and the High Point Area Arts Council. Throughout the past months, GCS employees have made donations to the annual Arts Fund Drive, which supports both arts councils and the grants they give to schools.

Donations will be accepted to the GCS Arts Fund Drive through Friday, May 18 and can be made either online or by filling out a form with a campaign coordinator.

Alday Wins NC PTA School Nurse of the Year
Anita Alday
Anita Alday is the NC PTA School Nurse of the Year.
During the month of May, school nurses are recognized for their work in keeping students healthy, in school and ready to learn. School nurse Anita Alday, is one of the dedicated nurses working in GCS. She recently received the first North Carolina PTA School Nurse of the Year award for her work at Summerfield Elementary. She also serves Madison Elementary, Irving Park Elementary and Brown Summit Middle.

The School Nurse of the Year award was created to recognize school nurses for dedicated excellence to children's health through school nursing. The North Carolina PTA considered several factors in choosing Alday as the recipient, including how well she works with the school PTA and administration to plan activities and events for students and families. She worked on several programs this year, including Slip, Slap, Slop, a sun and skincare program for cancer awareness, Eating and Living Healthy, Dental Health Prevention in cooperation with a local dentist and vision screenings.

Even though it was only her first year as a nurse in GCS, the schools she works with report that she is one of the best nurses they have ever had. They also say, "She is accessible to students, staff and parents alike," and "She goes out of her way to make sure that all students are not only physically taken care of, but that they feel cared for as well."
