Athletic Projects Prepare for Fall
Two Schools Hold Groundbreakings

Southeast Area Makes Progress

Construction projects at Alamance Elementary, Southeast Middle and Southeast High schools are on track to reach completion this fall as scheduled.

At Alamance Elementary, work is 98 percent complete on an addition to house a new administration area, media center and K-2 classrooms. Renovations to the existing building, which will hold third, fourth and fifth-grade classrooms and the cafeteria, is more than halfway finished. A new bus loop will be ready by August, and a new parent loop and playfield is scheduled to be completed by Oct. 1.

Southeast Middle should be fully updated by August with a new guidance suite, classroom additions and bathroom and lighting upgrades. The new administrative area, media center and gymnasium were completed in June. Shared space between the middle and high schools also includes a new greenhouse, bus parking lot and visitors' entry drive.

Renovations to the existing Southeast High building are also expected to be complete in August. There, the former media center, offices and classrooms are being converted into new science, art and life skills classrooms.

Summerfield Cafeteria Demolished as Renovations Near Completion

The cafeteria building at Summerfield Elementary was reduced to rubble last week. The older building, which was too small to accommodate the student population, will be replaced by a two-story building that will house the cafeteria, media center and additional classroom space. The renovated facility will open in August and reunite the grade levels, which have been split between the Summerfield and Laughlin Elementary campuses.

While most construction projects are completed in anticipation of an Aug. 25 deadline, athletic projects have a slightly tighter turnaround time. Workers are busy putting the finishing touches on new lighting, signs, parking spaces and fencing at Simeon Stadium, which serves several schools in the High Point area. Other changes include renovated bathrooms, ticketing areas and concession stands.

The newly updated stadium will welcome its first guests at the High Point Central vs. Andrews High football game on Aug. 19. Projects are also progressing rapidly at Grimsley and Page athletic fields.

At High Point Central High, the gymnasium will receive

a new concession stand and ticket booth as well as a new multi-purpose room and renovated locker rooms and offices. The concession stand and ticket booth portion should be completed by October 2011.

More than a dozen schools are currently undergoing construction in some form. Ragsdale will hold its groundbreaking ceremony on Aug. 11.
