Northwest Middle, High Project Begins
Robert Melton Joins Construction Team

Board Approves Next Phase at Ragsdale

The construction projects included in the 2008 School Construction Bond for Ragsdale High will be fully underway soon. The Guilford County Board of Education recently approved a contractual amendment with D.H. Griffin/Balfour Beatty for Phase 2 additions and renovations at Ragsdale as well as construction of an autism wing.

Phase 2 construction includes combining the existing Ragsdale and former Jamestown Middle facilities into one school building and constructing a new facility for students with autism. When construction is complete, Ragsdale will have a new media center, main gymnasium and administration area. There will also be a separate autism wing with special classrooms, support facilities and its own entrance.

Did you know?

Summer is one of the busiest times of year for construction crews. Empty schools allow for easier access to the building.

Congratulations to our NEED Winners

Three GCS schools were recently recognized by the National Energy Education (NEED) project for their conservation efforts through Energy WISE.

Sedgefield Elementary was named Elementary Rookie School of the Year on both the national and state levels.  Southern High was named North Carolina School of the Year for the senior level, and Northern Middle was named North Carolina School of the Year at the junior level.

All 24 Energy WISE schools were celebrated at an awards banquet on May 21. Congratulations to all our teams!

GCS Welcomes Robert Melton to Facilities and Construction Team

Robert Melton
Robert Melton

Robert Melton Jr. is a firm believer in planning, a skill that will be invaluable to him in his new role in GCS. Melton has joined the district as Executive Director of Facilities and Construction Management.

As such, he's responsible for overseeing the planning and construction departments and ensuring that long-term projects are handled on time and on budget.

"I'm excited about the opportunity to work with a great team," he says. "Guilford County Schools has an excellent superintendent and a growing school system, and I'm proud to be a part of that."

His ultimate goal is to provide students with a safe and state-of-the-art learning environment, and Melton has plenty of experience in that already. A veteran of facilities management, he has more than 20 years of experience in healthcare and university settings, including N.C. State University, North  Carolina Central University and Fayetteville State University. This is his first K-12 position, but Melton says his experience in the healthcare field has helped him understand the constraints of working in an occupied building.

One key to success in that environment, Melton believes, is good communication with the parties involved. "My job is to make sure there are no surprises." School districts, like hospitals and universities, must place an emphasis on quality, he says, because our facilities must last for generations. "We want to find the best ways to build facilities, which is not always the cheapest. We want our customers to have a quality product."

Melton looks forward to the challenges his new role will bring. "I have a passion for facilities. I try to make sure there are no impediments for the teachers and students," he says. "I like solving their issues in a changing environment."

A North Carolina native, Melton has spent much of his career in the Raleigh area. He'll be joined in Guilford County by his wife, Alfreda, and son, Jackson, a sophomore at Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School.
