Andrews High
Top Floor Reopens

 

The top floor of the main building at Andrews High reopened Monday morning after the school's HVAC installation and roof repair reached substantial completion.

 

Since the beginning of the school year, students and teachers at Andrews have only used part of the school while the maintenance projects were underway.

 

The portion of the building that reopened includes classrooms, the media center and offices.

Board to Discuss Proposed Names for North-area Elementary

 

The Board of Education will hold a special called meeting on Thursday, Feb. 10, to discuss the name of the new North Greensboro Area Elementary School. Proposed names can be found here.

Dudley's English Building Approved 
to Begin Renovation
 

The Board of Education 
approved the award of a construction services contract to Central Builders, Inc., in the amount of $1,580,000, for the renovation of the English Building at Dudley High School.

 

The project, which has a construction budget of $2,480,667, is scheduled to be complete in August of 2011.
Ragsdale Project Enters Phase One of Construction

Preparations are being made for road-widening activities near Ragsdale High.

The Ragsdale High and Autism Wing project is now in Phase One of construction, which includes demolition activities within the interior of the former Jamestown Middle School. Sprinkler upgrades are also part of Phase One activities.

 

Outside the school, crews are installing sedimentation control devices and demolishing existing structures along Vickery Chapel road in preparation for road widening. Substantial completion of Phase One is projected for July.

 

Says Principal Kathryn Rogers, "We are very excited that construction has begun on this worthwhile project, and we're looking forward to the opportunity to better serve our students when renovation is complete."

Southeast Welcomes Public to View Media Center, Classrooms

Southeast High hosted a spring open house on Wednesday, Feb. 2, to welcome visitors to its new media center and classroom space.
  
The two-story addition was completed on time last year, and the move to the new space
began Dec. 6.
  
"Our students and staff are really enjoying the media center and classrooms, and we were proud to be able to share that with the community," says principal Charles Blanchard.
Bids Under Consideration For Multiple Projects

McLeansville Elementary will get an expanded media center and classroom addition. Bids are being considered.

McLeansville Elementary: Received bids for single prime general construction services on January 13, 2011. Bid evaluation is currently under way. Technology bids are scheduled to be received February 8, 2011.

 

High Point Central High: Received bids for single prime general construction and technology installation services on January 20, 2011. The architect and GCS staff members are evaluating the bids.

 

Northwest High and Middle: Morganti/Horus, the Construction Management at Risk firm for the Northwest High and Middle renovation and addition projects, received bids for multiple trade packages on December 1, 2 and 16, 2010.  Bid evaluations are currently under way.

Building Futures Celebrates Black History Month

Norma Sklarek was the first African-American woman to become a licensed architect in 1954. She was also the first woman to be elected Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (FAIA). In 1985, she became the first African-American woman to form and manage an architectural firm when she partnered with Margot Siegel and Katherine Diamond to form Siegel, Sklarek, Diamond. Her major projects include City Hall in San Bernardino, California, Fox Plaza in San Francisco, Terminal One at the Los Angeles International Airport and the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo.

GCS currently has three African-American architectural firms providing services for the 2008 Bond program.

  • Clinton Gravely, AIA (Principal  - Clinton Gravely, AIA) - Grimsley additions and renovations. Past projects include Oak Ridge and Pleasant Garden elementaries.
  • The Obsidian Group (Principal - Ken Martin, AIA) - Dudley High English Building renovations and athletic improvements. Past projects include Oak View and Parkview elementaries.
  • Millennium 3 Design Group (Principal - Anthony Hunt, AIA) - Allen Jay Middle additions and renovations. Past projects include Guilford Elementary replacement school, Union Hill Elementary replacement school and The Academy at Smith.
