Gym, Classroom Space Under Construction at Southwest High
At Southwest High, a little cold weather won't stop workers from pumping concrete that will become the base of the school's new gym, a facility that will hold 1,700 people.
Concrete strengthens and

However, when placed in cold temperatures, the hydration process can be slowed, causing damage to its finish or lengthening the time it takes to cure.
Workers will add hot water or use blankets to ensure that it cures correctly, and third-party testing will confirm that the concrete is ready before the next phase of construction begins. The concrete will reach its full strength after 28 days.
Southwest is also adding a two-story classroom addition and media center that will total 62,508 square feet. Workers are beginning the second story of the project. The current media center will be renovated to add four more classrooms. The project is expected to be complete by December 2011. |

Northern, Eastern High Schools Grow from Within
Northern High is growing, although you wouldn't know it from outside the building.
| | This shell space at Northern will soon become a science classroom. |
When the high school was completed just a few years ago, "shell" space, or unfinished space, was included to anticipate future growth. Now, that space is being finished out.
Four shell spaces are under construction to become six finished classrooms and one storage room. Workers are installing drywall now and will add cabinetry soon. A similar project is under way at Eastern High. |
