GCS Celebrates Groundbreaking at Alamance Elementary

the groundbreaking of Alamance Elementary. The project includes the construction of a classroom addition, renovation of an existing 37,000-sq.-ft. classroom and cafeteria building, demolition of three existing buildings and extensive site work. The classroom addition will also include a gymnasium, media center and administrative wing. The total budget for the project is about $20 million.
 
Upcoming groundbreakings include Summerfield Elementary. Upcoming ribbon cuttings include Jamestown Middle and Haynes-Inman

GCS Breaks Ground at Southeast High and Middle

Guilford County Schools officially launched today two projects that are part of the 2008 school construction bond. In celebration, the district held a combined groundbreaking ceremony for the renovations planned at Southeast Middle and Southeast High.
Guilford County Commissioners Approve QSCB Funds
Maintenance funds are on the way to 23 GCS schools. The Guilford County Board of Commissioners approved the use of $16.843 million in Qualified School Construction Bonds (QSCB), federal stimulus bond funding, to pay for 28 maintenance projects at the schools. These projects include repairs and replacements for windows and doors, HVAC (heating/ventilation/air conditioning) systems and roofs. Read more.
Sustainable and Holistic Approach to Design and Construction
Building energy-efficient school facilities is not just about being "green." It is about providing high-performing facilities that are safe, healthy and conducive to learning. It is also about building facilities that are cost-effective from their inception and in the long term. 
 
Many school districts are working under ever-tightening budgets, so reduced operating costs are welcomed. With careful planning, facilities and construction departments can build schools that encourage learning, reduce long-term operating costs and lessen the effect on the environment while controlling up-front construction costs. The keys are including staff as active participants in the process and using a holistic approach to facility design.

Check Out a Few of the Building Advisory Team Meetings
Building Advisory Teams have been meeting and working around the clock to ensure that each project meets the needs of every GCS student. Look below to find out the inside scoop on a few projects. 
Southeast Area Elementary, North Greensboro Area Elementary and Airport Area Middle and High
Potential sites have been identified for the Southeast area elementary school, north Greensboro area elementary school and airport area middle and high schools. Acquisition negotiations and due diligence are ongoing.
Ragsdale High School/Autism Wing
A new wing for the school has been designed and is currently out for bid. The design team has completed the design development of the new autism wing design and has reviewed it with Building Advisory Team.
Summerfield Elementary School
The Facilities staff continues to work with the construction manager and architect to prepare and coordinate the procurement phase of the project. Drilling of test wells is complete, and staff is awaiting final test results.
