Check Out a Few of the Building Advisory Team Meetings A lot has been happening during the Building Advisory Team meetings in GCS. Look below to find out the inside scoop on a few projects. Alamance Elementary School The goal of converting the school to hold 700 students is well on the way. A new well has been drilled and the contract has been awarded to an architect. GCS has come in significantly under the budget set for this project and the architect is scheduled to break ground soon.
The new high school that will hold 1200 students is currently in the planing phase. There is no Building Advisory Team set for this project; however, that has not stopped movement on the project. Architecture firms are currently being interviewed to begin design on the new high school. Sites for the new school near Piedmont Triad Airport are being investigated. GCS Pilots Energy Efficiency Program at Four Schools GCS is holding true to the pledge of improving energy efficiency it made as part of the strategic plan launched last year. GCS recently completed a pilot energy efficiency audit at four schools. The audit looks at how GCS compares on three specific audit measures such as electricity, natural gas and fuel oil that are aligned to industry standards. Ultimately, GCS plans to audit each of the 120 schools in the system. The district estimates it will take five years to complete this process.

Learn More About the Architect Selection and Schematic Design Process In the coming months, Guilford County Schools (GCS) will break ground on a number of construction projects. Before construction can occur, the district must follow an extensive planning process that can last from two months to a year depending on the type and size of the project. From start to finish, each goes through both a design phase and construction phase.
Design begins with the selection of an architectural firm. The Facilities Department issues a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to solicit information from interested architectural firms. After extensive review of the qualification documents, the Facilities staff makes recommendations to the Architect Selection Committee, which is made up of members from the Guilford County Board of Education. The Architectural Committee presents its top recommendations to the full Board of Education, and the board can then decide to use the selection recommended by the committee or it can make its own recommendations for architectural firms to be selected for the project.
