The other day I was discussing with a friend about how athletics has changed over the years. "The days are gone where you can tell a player to run another lap without them 'lawyer-ing up' or dropping out to join another team." she said.  This wasn't the first time I had participated in such a discussion. 
 
Whatever the case may be for why we have arrived here, motivating the workforce has become increasingly more important to executing business objectives.

During a recent visit to the auto mechanic to get my truck worked on I received the assessment everyone dreads.... the infamous, "Well, it's worse than we thought, you'll need to leave it with us for a couple of days."
 
Over the next several days being forced to walk or catch a ride, I had plenty of time to reflect. As the thoughts of the inconvenience, damage and cost being incurred; I knew, there was a lesson in this to be learned. 
 
Growing up my father and I could always connect and spend countless hours looking at, talking about and generally bonding over cars. I remember one of the brief, but brilliant moments where he told me, "it's easier to change your oil every three thousand miles, than to get a new engine every two years."
 
It seemed so obvious at the time, little did I understand the magnitude of his comment. The "regular maintenance" of life; paying attention daily before issues get so overwhelming they blow up on you.
