WHAT YOUR BODY KNOWS THAT YOUR MIND DOESN'T...
|
|
Dear ,
On
the eve of this Thanksgiving holiday, I thought it was important to remind some
of you and introduce others to the mind body connection. When we understand and utilize this
connection it keeps us grounded and in the present moment, even during the most
trying circumstances...which, for some of us, might just include a holiday dinner
with the family...
A
lot of people go through life in a trance.
Unaware of what is happening around them and within them. They bury themselves in daily activities-
errands, work, chores, exercise, etc.- which clouds big-picture vision and
diverts emotional intelligence. With
schedules so jam packed, it's easy to hide from what may be going on underneath
all the hubbub. In order to truly
experience life, we must peel away that superficial armor of busyness, quiet
the mind, and be with our hearts and our bodies.
The
body doesn't lie.
Emotions are processed by our bodies first and foremost. Most of us have been conditioned to send
those feelings immediately up to our minds.
Once the experience reaches the mind, we have the ability to
intellectualize it away, thereby shielding our inner self from ever feeling the
emotion, and in the process never truly experiencing or dealing with the
event. We protect ourselves in the
short-term but we hinder our development and potential for success in the long
run.
We
become more engaged in life and more conscious when we allow ourselves to
explore our experiences, a practice that begins with our connection to the
body. In order to become AWARE of what
we are experiencing, we need to slow down and be in the moment. One important way to instantly access the present
moment is to focus on our breath. By
simply bringing attention to one full breath in and one full breath out, we are
able to access the present moment and move one step closer to existing in that
field of awareness. This awareness
allows us to process events in the body as they are happening instead of
diverting them to the brain for analysis.
By doing this, we discover how we truly feel about a situation, and we
can react accordingly. We are able to
experience the event as it happens, work through it, and move on from it.
Recognizing
the mind body connection can have immediate and powerful effects on the
individual. We are simultaneously
infused with aliveness and a sense of vulnerability. We feel liberated and yet exposed. Some people finally gain the clarity to make
decisions they've been debating for years, like getting married or changing
their career trajectory. They discover
the answer by discovering awareness of the present moment.
If
you would like to learn more about the mind body connection or explore your
own, please feel free to contact me.
Happy
Thanksgiving!
-Andrea
