Dear Foundation Fellows:

The holiday season is upon us, and it's a busy time for everyone. As the days grow shorter and colder, we can appreciate a roaring fire and lots of hot chocolate to help keep us warm.  We can also enjoy the festive lighting displays that remind us that
we will be getting more daylight hours right after December 21.  As we look forward to lengthening days and a new year, I wish you the happiest of holidays and much success in 2011!

Chief Justice Mike Heavican Presents Award to Bar Foundation President Bob Berkshire

On October 21, the Mandatory Continuing Legal Education Commission of the Nebraska Supreme Court presented an award to the Nebraska State Bar Foundation.  This was in recognition of the generous support given by the Foundation allowing the adaptation of state-of-the-art technology to assist attorneys in complying with the Nebraska Supreme Court Rule on Mandatory Continuing Education.

In his remarks the Chief Justice noted that, thanks to the support of the Bar Foundation, the MCLE Commission was able to purchase software to build an automated system for approving sponsors of continuing legal education and tracking lawyer education credits.  The award was accepted by Foundation President Robert Berkshire.

History Made at State Mock Trial Championship
Skutt Catholic Sends Two Teams!
Judge Strom Presents Award
Judge Lyle E.Strom Recognizes the Skutt Green Team as
State  Mock Trial Champions

For the first time in State Mock Trial history, a school was able to advance two teams from their regional competition to the State Championship.  The Skutt Catholic Green team and the Skutt White team represented Regions 11 and 12 from the Omaha area.  One of those teams, Skutt Catholic Green, won the State Championship title.  The team will represent Nebraska at Nationals which will be held in Phoenix in May.

This project is a HUGE cooperative effort.   In order for Mock Trial to run smoothly we must enlist the help of over 400 volunteers who serve as coordinators, judges, and coaches. This program would not be successful without you...thank you!  Enough appreciation cannot be shown to the State's Mock Trial Regional Coordinators.  To them we are truly indebted.

We the People State Hearings - January 10, 2011
Foundation Announces New State WTP Coordinator

We would like to welcome our new State We the People Coordinator, Pam Hastings Carrier.  She succeeds Sarah Peetz, who joined the Lincoln community Foundation.  On behalf of the Bar Foundation, we sincerely appreciate all of Sarah's time and energy spent on We The People.  She will be missed!

Ms. Carrier will begin her new position by coordinating the upcoming Nebraska State High School Competition on January 10, 2011, at the Embassy Suites in Lincoln.  The format for the competition is a simulated Congressional hearing.  The hearings are great to watch, as the students have an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge about the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.  Most students will incorporate both historical U.S. Supreme Court cases and current cases into their responses to the judges' questions.
