Dear SDSU faculty members,
Your Council of Higher Education, the collective bargaining
agent for faculty, is engaged in important work to defend faculty rights. We work on the collective rights of faculty
whenever possible. However, we offer
special protection and assistance for our members.
We aggressively defend our members! Recently, we have protected several COHE members whose positions were threatened. Further, we could have saved the jobs of non-members, if those individuals had joined COHE and followed our advice.
Next week, we have organized a campus-wide membership drive to reach out to potential members. If a COHE member stops by your office, please
warmly welcome them and listen to their story.
If you are interested in joining COHE, please respond to this message, call
me at 688-4914, or use my non-SDSU email: garyaguiar1@gmail.com.
I know many complain about membership dues. The dues is reasonable compared to the cost of cable or satelite television (about $60 per month for those on nine-month contracts). Your COHE membership dues ensures you have a job to pay all of those other bills.
You cannot afford NOT to join us. Besides all sorts of discounts and benefits
which can offset dues, faculty need the protection that only a union can
provide. Junior faculty especially need
our mentoring and assistance in career advice and strategies.
You might be saying to yourself, if they
terminate me or deny me tenure, I will simply go somewhere else. You need to take a closer look at the
academic market. A termination or tenure
denial can permanently and irretrievably destroy your academic career. Regardless whether you remain at SDSU or
not, the blotch on your record is very difficult to explain to prospective
employers. Our legal protection and
assistance ensures you are treated fairly, so that you can protect your career
here and elsewhere.
As part of next week's membership drive, COHE will host an Ice Cream
Social, next Wednesday, September 22, 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the Student Union,
Room 269. We would love to see you
there.
Cordially yours,
Gary Aguiar
