Community Center News

Winter 2011/2012

Dear Members,

As you know, last month we conducted several Membership Open Forums specifically to discuss the possibility of reducing facility operating hours on weekends. Thank you to those who were able to attend or send emails to provide some input. After careful and thorough review of three years of facility usage data and listening to members, there is a clear understanding that the facility needs to operate as efficiently as possible in the best interest of the entire membership. It has been increasingly difficult to justify keeping the facility open after 8pm on Saturday and Sunday evenings for the small percentage of members that use the facility after those times. Beginning January 7, 2012, we will temporarily reduce operating hours on Saturdays by closing at 8:00pm rather than 10:00pm and on Sundays by closing at 8:00pm rather than 9:00pm. These reductions will allow us to be more efficient with a minimal impact on member facility use, programming and general community use. As is done regularly, the pool closes 30 minutes prior to the building closing to allow ample time for visitors to shower and for pool area routine cleaning. We will re-evaluate the operating hours after a year and make any adjustments as warranted. We welcome your feedback and appreciate your understanding. Thank you for your support of the Mansfield Community Center!

Sincerely,

Curt Vincente

Kettlebells 101: Getting Back to Basics

What is a kettlebell?

A kettlebell is a cast iron weight, with a single looped handle. It originates from Russia and is also called a Girya.

What do I do with a kettlebell?

The kettlebell is used to perform ballistic exercises that combine cardiovascular, strength and flexibility training. This creates a whole body approach to fitness. The key is to start small, focus on proper technique and form.

Can I do kettlebells if I have an injury?

Please notify your instructor prior to the class if you have a current injury. Modifications may be made to allow you to participate fully. For your safety, please get a doctor's clearance prior to beginning any new fitness program.

Why can't I just use dumbbells?

Kettlebells are unique in their design in that their center of mass extends beyond the handle. This allows for swinging and more ballistic exercises. This will recruit more muscles, resulting in a better overall workout.

How can I learn more?

The Mansfield Community Center is offering two winter session Kettlebell 101 courses. These courses are taught by Jessica Tracy. You will learn the swing, squat, and Turkish Get-up.

The following programs have been designed especially for pre-school children (ages 3-5, not yet in school). Most are new and we are excited about offering them this winter. Parents are welcome to stay, but can also take advantage of the time to work out, take a swim, or just have some "down" time while your children are having fun and learning something along the way. We also welcome suggestions for future programs.
