Logo with Tagline

Introducing our new tagline:
Family, Fitness & Fun

A new tagline has been created for Mansfield Parks & Recreation and the Mansfield Community Center.  Family, Fitness & Fun helps to communicate what the Community Center is all about.  After a lengthy process of creating numerous taglines we then "tested" some of the final selections with members of the center and participants in Parks & Recreation programs to get your feedback.  In the end we selected these three words - Family, Fitness & Fun.

Family - we serve all families.  Everyone is part of the MCC family.

Fitness - we encourage physical, mental, and social health for all abilities and ages.

Fun - a component of everything we do.

A Day at the Center, April 10,
 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

An annual favorite, the Kids' Flea Market will take place in the Community Center Gymnasium. Kids can rent a table for $5 and sell or trade some of their old stuff. Shopping is open to everyone, but only children in grades 1-8 may rent tables. Pre-registration is required. Please bring enough money to make change.

In conjunction with New York Life Insurance Company, we will be offering FREE child fingerprinting. Children will be fingerprinted and photographed and ID cards will be made for the parents. In case of emergency, parents will have an easy to find kit that will include necessary information for the police.

CT Safe Kids will be sponsoring a Car Seat Safety Check to keep our kids safe. There is an estimation that 80% of car seats are misused, either because a child is in the wrong seat, the seat is installed improperly or the child is not placed in the seat correctly. At this event, seats will be checked by trained staff. Please bring your vehicle, car seat, and child using that seat to this safety check.

Bicycle Drive for Families in Need, April 10
What child (or adult) doesn't love a bike and what a great way to be healthy! If you have a tricycle, kids bicycle, adult bicycle or bicycle helmet that is taking up space and collecting dust, please consider donating it on Saturday, April 10th, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.

The Mansfield Community Center will host the drive for the Little Angels Bicycle Program of Willimantic. Bicycles that are received are evaluated and then repaired if necessary by Little Angels staff before being distributed. Bikes are distributed through Little Angles Bicycle Program after the date of this event. Mansfield residents in need of bikes should contact either Jay O'Keefe at
OkeefeJM@Mansfieldct.og (860.429.3015, 104) or Little Angels directly at freebicycles@littleangelsbicycles.com or 860.423-4290.

The ability to fill bike orders is dependant upon inventory and demand.
As a "thank you" the Mansfield Community Center will offer all donors the following. Community Center Members: Two free guests passes for each helmet and bike donated. Non-Community Center members: One free day pass and waiving the enrollment fee on a community center membership.

Member Completes Ford Ironman Lake Placid

 Charlie Eaton Ironman
Why did I set out to do the Ford Ironman Lake Placid? Maybe it was the quote that hung on my refrigerator that had spurred me on in other races, "Only those who attempt the absurd achieve the impossible." (Anonymous) I had been running regularly since 1986 including 8 marathons. Swimming in High School made it easy to start doing laps when the new pool at the Mansfield Community Center (MCC) opened in late 2003. In college I biked a lot and really enjoyed it. So triathlon was a natural sport for me. About 6 years ago I was prompted by friends to do a short distance triathlon in Marlborough, CT., called a sprint. Over the ensuing years I slowly built up to ½ iron distance triathlons, completing two. The next logical step was Ironman.

Now the question was how was I going to train so I could complete this coveted race?  I met Dot Burnworth, an accomplished triathlete, at MCC in the fall of 2008.  She had also signed up for Lake Placid and shared a book she successfully used called  beIRONfit by Don Fink. The whole Ironman relies on aerobic or fat burning - you will not have enough glycogen reserves left in your muscles after you complete 2.4 miles of swimming and 112 miles of biking to complete the 26.2 mile marathon unless you train mostly at the lower heart rate zones to maximize your aerobic capacity. So this is what I did. Starting my official 30 weeks of Don Fink's competitive training program on December 29, 2008 through July 25, 2009, I logged 78 hours of swimming completing 115 miles, 32 hours of spinning inside, 135 hours on the bike outside completing 2,090 miles, and 126 hours of running completing 749 miles; a total of 371 hours and 2,953 miles, not including time on my core and upper body. I averaged 12.4 hours per week in the three sports taking one day off each week, with the peak week totaling 21 hours.A total of 325 workouts in 30 weeks.

What is your best memory of the competition?  It was about mile 16 of the run that I met an angel. His name is Ron Ottaway and he is 72 years old. We struck up conversation but soon it was evident we were to become Ironman kindred spirits. He needed me and I needed him as the next 10 miles would be mentally tough. He wanted to qualify for Kona, the Hawaii World Championship in October. He had completed 35 Ironman races and won the World Championship in Hawaii two years ago in his age bracket. Together we approached the finish on the same outdoor speed skating rink that Eric Heiden set four Olympic records and one world record at the 1980 Winter Olympic Games. We finished hand in hand and I heard the announcer say Charlie Eaton is an Ironman.

Will you do another Ironman?  First I need to recover from recent shoulder surgery as a result of an injury totally unrelated to my triathlon training. If you train well almost any fit person can accomplish such a feat. But the training takes a toll not only physically and mentally on the athlete but also on the family. At this time, I am not sure I can commit to the training. But I do have my sights on Ironman Switzerland, where my son Nate lives.

Side note:  Charlie is glad to talk to anyone about triathlon. He willingly wants to share his love for the sports of triathlon and running. And a complete account of his Ironman experience is on the

www.runstorrs.org website. You can also contact him from that website.
