Delicious Bean Veggie Spread

Recipe: Bean Veggie Spread

1 red pepper, stem and seeds removed, and quartered lengthwise
1 medium onion, sliced 1/2-inch thick
3 cloves garlic, peeled
1 - 15 oz. can cannellini or Great Northern beans, drained and rinsed
3 T. freshly chopped parsley
2 T. lemon juice
1/2 t. salt
1/4 t. pepper

Yield: 2 Cups

Line a cookie sheet with aluminum foil and place the pepper and onion in rows on the foil. Broil the vegetables for 5-7 minutes or until slightly charred, and remove the cookie sheet from the oven. Flip over the vegetables, add the cloves of garlic to the cookie sheet, return the cookie sheet to the oven, and broil an additional 5-7 minutes to slightly char the other side. Allow the vegetables to cool slightly and then gently remove the skin from the peppers. In a food processor or blender, place the roasted vegetables, white beans, lemon juice, salt, and pepper, and process until smooth. Add the parsley and process for an additional 30 seconds to thoroughly incorporate it. Transfer the mixture to a glass bowl. Use as a spread on crackers, bread, or sandwiches, or serve with raw vegetables or fill half celery cavities with spread and top with shredded carrots to serve.

Le Bocage

the Homestead 1875

Postcard Drawing from mid 1870s. The caption reads "The Beaconsfield Vineyard"

The Grove 2012

Le Bocage, (Beaconsfield Yacht Club), January 2012

Le Bocage was built for Paul Valois in 1812. Paul was descended from Jean-Baptiste de Valois who immigrated to Canada in 1723 and founded Valois village. In 1874 the Honorable J.H. Menzies bought the property in order to establish a vineyard. He renamed the house "The Homestead" and by 1879 over twenty acres of land extending a mile and a half north, (almost to what is now Hymus Blvd), were under cultivation. While the vineyard did not last, one enduring consequence of M. Menzies' ownership was the name he gave to the property. "Beaconsfield" was named after his friend Benjamin Disraeli, the Earl of Beaconsfield.

By 1888 le Bocage was turned into a restaurant and resort and was renamed "The Grove Point Inn". From 1941 to 1945 the Canadian Government appropriated Le Bocage and used it to inter several high ranking Japanese Canadians and their families under RCMP guard. While tutors were brought in to teach the children, no one was permitted to leave the premises for the duration of the war.

In 1970, Le Bocage was leased to the Beaconsfield Yacht Club.

To learn more about the history of Le Bocage, see "A History of Pointe Claire" by Brian R. Matthews. This book is available in the Pointe Claire Library.

On April 27 to 29 we hosted a weekend of relaxation at the Round Hearth in the Eastern Townships. Time was spent walking, relaxing, doing yoga, and learning about how to make every day a retreat. There was plenty of good food and good company and we can't wait for the next one.   Round Hearth Fire
