Believe to Succeed                                  by Ian Ramsay

Many people feel that their lives are missing a purpose or some goal that they can't quite identify or reach. Here is a list of some of the common limiting beliefs that keep us from succeeding at what we set out to do, and things we can do to change them.

  1. Rationalizing the way things are. The belief sounds like this: Things are OK the way they are now and I don't need to change. We become addicted to a certain comfort level. Family, friends and companies want you to stay where you are too because you are consistently providing them with the things that they want. If you stay there, the deep sacred part that makes you unique will wither and die. By the age of forty, many people experience spiritual demise in the form of depression, illness, injuries and relationship problems. A more constructive paradigm is to do activities that you are uniquely suited to do which draw upon your special talents and strengths. Then you are living your life's purpose.
  2. Demand resistance is a chronic and automatic negative response to any expectations or demands by others on you. Some examples are feeling anger or resentment when someone asks you to do something, or finding every excuse not to follow advice from a well intentioned friend. Demand resistance can also arise when you set goals for yourself without conscious reflection and then unconsciously sabotage them. (did someone say New Year's Resolutions?),  The result is anger and frustration with yourself. A constructive way to begin to change this is to recognize it when it   happens. Notice negative self talk when you are demand resistant. Demand resistant people say things like "I have to do this" or "I should ..."  Consciously replace "shoulds" and "have to's" with "I choose to". Eventually you will choose to do the things that will further your life's purpose.
  3. Perfectionism is characterized by all or nothing thinking. The thinking is, "If I can't do it perfectly then I won't try to do it at all".  Rationally, we all realize that it's impossible to be perfect but the drive for perfection is not based on rational thought. A healthier way to temper perfectionism is to identify the fear that underlies it. One common fear is lack of self esteem. The belief is that if I don't act perfectly then people will see me the way I really am and they won't like me. A more powerful belief is that "I can do things well and people will like me".
  4. Fear of failure. We are conditioned by school to associate failure with negative consequences like parental animosity, summer school or repeating the grade. Many would rather live small and not take a risk that might lead to failure and dredge up painful memories but which could also lead to success. A more constructive paradigm is to associate failure with not reaching the goal that you set yourself and then using it as an opportunity to learn something valuable in the process.
  5. Fear of success. If you have an image of yourself as being flawed in some way, or if  you think that your success will result in outshining someone you care about, then you will self sabotage your own success or prevent it form happening in the first place. Here's an example: If I believe that I am a bad person, and also that bad people do not deserve success.  As I come closer to succeeding, the incongruence between my values and my success becomes greater and will cause me to sabotage, (undermine), my success. A way to identify if you have a fear of success is to ask yourself, "What will be different for me if I succeed at this?" Do the pros of your success outweigh the cons?

Sometimes we are consciously aware of our limiting beliefs but more often we have formed these beliefs in childhood and buried them so deeply that we are no longer conscious of them. If you have discovered a repetitive pattern of failure, for example your relationships always break down for the same reason, or people you meet always treat you with the same lack of respect, then you are spinning your wheels and acting out a hidden limiting belief over and over again. To learn more about how to identify and change hidden beliefs so that you can achieve your full potential, here are some further resources that you can check into:

Love your ♥                                  by Ian Ramsay

Couch PussyWhat could be better for your heart, (and your stress levels), than coming home after a long day at the office, relaxing on the couch and watching the game or checking out a movie? The answer is "just about anything else" according to the latest findings in The Journal of the American College of Cardiology. The study, published in January, concluded that those who spend more than two hours a day of recreational screen time are 2.2 times as likely to experience a "major cardiovascular event" leading to hospitalization or death. Those who spend four hours or more in front of a screen per day were 50 percent more likely to die of any cause. Adults in the United States and Britain watch an average of over three hours of TV per day. What can you do differently if you are sedentary for long periods of time and want to improve your heart health?

Dr. Emmanuel Stamatakis, who authored the study, said that individuals who work at computers all day should get up and take short breaks and walks occasionally. He observed that 95% of the people in Britain do not do the minimum amount of 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity on at least five days a week. (A 2008 Stats Canada report said that 52% of Canadians are moderately active. See link to report below).

One of the mechanisms that may connect sedentary behavior and increased health risk are low concentrations of an enzyme called lipoprotein lipase which is responsible for breaking down blood lipids and making them available to muscles for energy. Another possible cause may be that extended sitting leads to high levels of low grade inflammation.

Lipoprotein lipase activity has been shown to increase in individuals who have attained a stable healthy body weight. Additionally, it is desirable to maintain relatively high concentrations of High Density Lipoprotein, (HDL), and relatively low concentrations of Low Density Lipoprotein, (LDL). LDL carries cholesterol throughout your body, depositing it onto your artery walls while HDL picks up excess cholesterol in your blood and takes it back to your liver for metabolism. In order to improve or maintain our health, it is important to raise our HDL and/or reduce LDL.  Here are some effective ways to raise HDL:

- Maintain healthy body weight. Weight loss achieved through exercise is more effective at raising HDL levels than dieting Exercise duration is more effective than exercise intensity to increase HDL-C. An hour of moderate intensity activity is more effective than 20 minutes at high intensity.

- Increase the monounsaturated fats such as in avocados, or olive oil in your diet.

- Minimize trans-fat intake. Commercial baked goods such as crackers, cookies and cakes and many fried foods such as doughnuts and French fries contain trans fats. Shortenings and margarines are also a no-no.

- Add at least two servings a day of soluble fibers in your diet. Soluble fibers are found in flaxseeds, oats, fruits, vegetables, and legumes.

- Drink cranberry juice.

- Eat two garlic cloves per day for 2-3 months to significantly decrease total LDL and increase HDL.

- Quit smoking

- Start a Daily Deep Breathing Program

- Reduce or eliminate coffee from your diet

- Focus on permanent changes to your eating and exercise habits. Take the Active Living Course or Awakening Mindfulness Course or start Meditating.
