Greetings!
A Monarch Butterfly displays colours that we associate with autumm leaves,
pumpkins and Halloween. Butterflies are also nature's way of manifesting exquisite beauty through inner work, growth and transformation.
What are YOUR hidden colours and hues that you have buried deep within you...the ones that cannot unfold because of fear, or low self-esteem, or sadness, or worry or anger ...or maybe just because you have not questioned whether you are living life full-out? Many of us are starting to awaken and realize that there Must be more to life - that at the very core, there is a deep yearning for 'something' that we can't quite put our finger on...yet, it's there, everyday, gnawing and demanding attention.
As always, the answers lie within us - only through introspection and taking apart unconscious behaviour patterns (which take up most of our day), can we begin to realize how we Really create our life. If you are totally satisfied with what you have created, we want to learn from you! But if you are like most people, looking to feel a deeper satisfaction as you discover, own and live your true, exquisite colours, come and join us for a wonderful journey.
It starts this Thursday evening for 8 weeks and it's called 'Awakening Mindfulness'. We look forward to sharing, growing and transforming with you. Rukhshana and Ian |

The Answer to Life, the Universe and Nearly Everything by Ian Ramsay
If the early stages of being in love were a weather report it might read, "Today's forecast is colossal hots with grandiose thoughts, (everything she/he does is magic), and a chance of scattered humility, (How could I be so lucky?)" What happens to cause this sunny report to change? More importantly; what can we do to maintain a high ongoing level of contentment with our lives?
The answer lies with essence. Essence is the fundamental part of ourselves which makes us truly us. When we are living in our essence, we fully express our creativity and live our purpose for being every day. In essence we are free of stress, clear in our purpose, and fully empowered to expand in abundance, success and love every day, as we inspire those around us to do the same.
So if essence is so great, why don't we live in essence all of the time? (continued below) |

The Captain is Back!
Just a quick note to let you know that the Captain has returned safely from Afghanistan. A group of Harmoni Angels put a care package together for him and sent it in January. Within hours of returning from a lengthy deployment, he remembered our package and mentioned how grateful he was to receive it. Thank you for your generosity! |

Eco Tip: Composting 101 Reprinted from The Compost Guide
Fall is a great time to start a compost pile. If you've ever thought about starting one but were not sure how to do it, here is a good place to start.
A great variety of things can be composted at home, saving them from a one-way trip to the landfill, and turning them into a valuable soil amendment for home use. This list describes some of the items you may want to add to your home compost pile.
The following items can be added to your compost pile:
GRASS/LAWN CLIPPINGS
Actually, it's usually easier to leave grass clippings in the lawn, where they will decompose and benefit the soil directly. However, they can be composted, too. Be cautious to add grass clippings in very thin layers, or thoroughly mix them in with other compost ingredients, as they otherwise tend to become slimy and matted down, excluding air from the pile. Fresh grass clippings are high in nitrogen, making them a 'green' compost ingredient.
HAY
Farmers are often very happy to get rid of spoiled hay bales that have been out in the rain, and will give them away or sell them at a low price. Grass hay will probably contain a lot of seed, which can resprout in your garden. Alfalfa hay will compost very readily. The greener the hay, the more nitrogen it contains. Be sure that any hay you plan to compost is well-moistened prior to addition to the pile.
KITCHEN WASTES
Fruit and vegetable peels/rinds, tea bags, coffee grounds, eggshells, and similar materials are great stuff to compost. They tend to be high in nitrogen (this puts them in the 'greens' category), and are usually quite soft and moist. As such, kitchen wastes need to be mixed in with drier/bulkier materials to allow complete air penetration. Many people compost their kitchen wastes in enclosed worm bins or bury them 8" deep in the soil, to keep from attracting pests to an outdoor compost pile (check with your local government to see if it has regulations about this -- some forbid open piles containing food wastes because of the pest issue). Avoid composting meat scraps, fatty food wastes, milk products, and bones -- these materials are very attractive to pests.
LEAVES
If you live in an area where autumn leaves are still thrown away as garbage, cash in on the bounty each year by acquiring your neighbors' leaves! Generally, leaves are an excellent compost ingredient. They can mat down and exclude air, though, so be sure that any clumps are thoroughly broken up, or that the leaves are only used in very thin layers. Ash and poplar/cottonwood leaves can raise soil pH if used in compost -- this may not be beneficial if your soil is already alkaline, as many soils are in the West (especially in semiarid and arid climates). Dead, dry leaves are in the 'browns' category, while living green leaves contain abundant nitrogen and are considered 'greens'.
STRAW
Dry straw is a good material for helping to keep a compost pile aerated, because it tends to create lots of passageways for air to get into the pile. Be sure to wet the straw, as it is very slow to decompose otherwise. Straw is definitely a 'brown' and also requires mixture with 'greens' to break down quickly. Many stables use straw as a bedding material for horses -- straw that has undergone this treatment is mixed in with horse manure and breaks down more quickly.
WEEDS AND OTHER GARDEN WASTES
Many types of weeds and old garden plants can be composted. Avoid weeds that have begun to go to seed, as seeds may survive all but the hottest compost piles. Some types of weeds are 'pernicious weeds' and will resprout in the compost pile -- avoid using these unless they are thoroughly dead. Green weeds are (you guessed it) a 'green', while dead brown weeds are a 'brown'.
WOOD CHIPS AND SAWDUST
Wood products belong in the 'browns' category, because they are fairly low in nitrogen. Some types of sawdust, especially from broadleaved/deciduous tress, will break down quickly in an active compost pile. Others, especially from coniferous trees, will take longer to decay. Stir sawdust thoroughly into the pile or use very thin layers. Coarse wood chips will very slowly decay, and are probably better used as mulch unless you have lots of time to wait. Be sure not to compost chips or sawdust from any sort of chemically-treated wood -- you could be adding toxics like arsenic to your pile if you do.

The Answer to Life, the Universe and Nearly Everything(continued from above)
We are born being in essence but lose touch with it early in life because something happens that triggers overwhelming feelings of fear, sadness, anger, abandonment, etc. in us. To deal with these strong emotions, we take on personas which are roles and behaviors that we think other people expect of us. Some of these personas are the "A" student, the quiet kid, the sick kid, the show off or the athlete. A persona helps to protect us from the pain of overwhelming feelings and helps us to gain recognition from those around us. Early in life we choose to abandon the world of how we feel inside for the world of how we appear to others from the outside.
What do we do instead of living in essence?
When we lose touch with our essence, we try to restore the feeling of wholeness, often with methods that absolutely do not work. One common example of this is addiction; to food, drink, drugs, sex, etc. All addictions and eating disorders are toxic attempts to restore essence through artificial means. A second dead-end path is the accumulation of things. This is an attempt to connect with essence by acquiring the symbols of it. A third common way that people attempt to restore essence is to find happiness in intimate relationships. While this distracts us from our pain for a time, inevitably the unconscious patterns return.
Here are some of the ways that people avoid becoming present to what is important:
- Being judgmental to our own feelings and those of others so that we don't give ourselves any room to be with them.
- Repetitive Drama is when we recycle dramas, usually in a way where we are right and someone else is wrong, we don't need to think about what is real underneath.
- Conceptualizing removes us from the immediacy of our feelings. A lonely person may escape feelings of loneliness by visualizing the contents of their refrigerator.
- Faulty Attribution is blaming something out there for something that is actually caused by something in here. My neck hurts because my boss yelled at me.
- Explanation/Logic is when people analyze and justify in great detail why they feel what they feel. Justification is feeling righteous about our feelings. If I deserve to feel the way I do then I don't have to look deeper into myself and figure out the reasons behind my feelings.
There are hundreds of ways to avoid being present but only one way to become present. Life is full of distractions. People avoid dealing with the issues of their lives by eating too much, watching too much TV, gambling, becoming addicted to drink or drugs, accumulating things...We have attempted to satisfy ourselves through our mouth, eyes and ears to escape a problem that lives inside of the body and that can only be effectively confronted through feeling it IN the body.
How can we get our essence back?
All of the ways to shift back into presence are based on being conscious of what we feel in our bodies. Here is a way to begin to do this.
Tune into something that you are feeling in your body. It could be hunger, tiredness or a feeling of unease. Put your attention on it without doing anything else to the sensation. Don't try to fix it, judge it or make it change. Simply rest your attention on it without doing anything else. Notice what happens when you get your attention fully connected with the sensation. Can you keep your attention on it, or does it jump away onto something else?
Breathing bridges the conscious and unconscious mind. When we sleep, breathing is unconscious but when we're awake we can choose to slow or speed up our breathing rate. Consciously choosing to breathe slower often effectively reduces stress that we feel. In the same way, feeling body sensations and connecting to the emotional content that causes them is the way to connect to essence. If you want to learn more about how to get in touch with your essence here are some good places to start.
