Some Thoughts about Leaving Home
Anticancer Cover

This month our son Andrew will be moving into his own apartment. He will have just turned nineteen. His older brother Matthew left for Afghanistan earlier this year in April. These are exciting times for both boys. They are exploring their places in the world and, while we will always support them, they must now make responsible decisions without us. This is the way it's supposed to be.
Like parents everywhere we hope that we have provided them with good values so that they can make effective decisions for themselves, and the wisdom to learn from the mistakes that they will also make. The house will be much quieter now without the sounds of two rambunctious boys chasing each other down the hall with rolled up cardboard swords, rap and speed metal music played way too loud, sleepovers with boys camping out in the basement whispering loudly and playing X box games until all hours and the inevitable loud disagreements that brothers everywhere have.  We will miss all of that as we enter into a new phase of our lives.
September is a month of new beginnings too; no less at Harmoni where we will begin an expanded schedule of studio classes and a varied line-up of workshops and courses for the fall semester. You can get a taste of what's in store by coming to our Open House on September 19th. We hope to see you there.

"Anticancer; A New Way of Life"
"All of us have cancer cells in our bodies. But not all of us will develop cancer."These words are found on the cover of the book "Anticancer" by David Servan-Schreiber M.D.  What follows is an easy-to-follow, mind-body cancer prevention program that is accessible to everyone who recognizes the power that their lifestyle choices can have on their overall health. The author himself was diagnosed with brain cancer at the age of 31 and, not satisfied with conventional medicine's approach to the disease, embarked on research of complimentary approaches.  After a brief description of the conditions necessary for cancer growth, the book gives detailed suggestions of lifestyle changes that can be made in four areas to create a bodily environment that is inhospitable to cancer. These four areas are:

Early Learning Canada Course

Do you have questions concerning your child's behavior?
~ Why does my 3-year-old always want to wear the same outfit?
~ Why is my 4-year-old started having nightmares?Do you have questions concerning your child's behavior?

The Early Learning Canada course, (ELC), is based on the understanding that the capacity to learn is optimized in the early years of life. The brain is constantly searching for meaning, experiences and ways to relate to and understand the world. After completing ELC, participants will be empowered to help children learn life.
Participants will learn:
·       how children "learn how to learn"
·       strategies to help children become effective thinkers
·       strategies to help children develop their language
·       a framework for learning that links early learning and learning for life
·       strategies to interact with children to maximize learning.
Come learn how the way your child interprets the world affects his/her behaviour, and leave with a fresh, new perspective on parenting!

Instructors:
Rebecca Allsopp and Judith Griffin-Koch are both trained Early Learning Canada workshop leaders who have over 35 years combined experience in the EC field - as educators, consultants, administrators, pedagogical consultants, and workshop leaders. Rebecca is also a drama specialist and supervisor at Vanier College.  Judith has presented at both McGill and Concordia Universities as well as at professional conferences in Canada and the US.  Both women are passionate about teaching parents better ways to deal with their young children.

In Memoriam
We are sad to report that Larry LaPrise, the man who wrote "The Hokey Pokey", died peacefully at age 93 last week.   The most traumatic part for his family was getting him into the coffin. They put his left leg in.  And then the trouble started.
Anticancer (continued from above)
  1. Dietary changes to reduce the intake of foods such as refined sugars, corn or soy fed beef and chicken, and margarine that promote cancer growth and increase the consumption of foods that actively fight cancer such as green tea, berries, and herbs such as mint, thyme, marjoram, oregano, basil, and rosemary as well as free range, organic meats.
  2. Minimizing exposure to toxins such as deodorants and antiperspirants containing aluminum, cosmetics, shampoo, lotions, gels, hair dye, nail polish and sunscreen containing estrogens or placental products and ethylene used to dry clean clothes.
  3. Regular aerobic exercise to inhibit inflammation and boost immunity.
  4. Creating an anticancer mind. Long term feelings of helplessness release stress hormones that stimulate the body's emergency systems such as the inflammatory response that can facilitate the growth and spread of tumors while, at the same time, slowing down digestion, tissue repair and immune system response. Confronting one's fears, being open to change based on new information and insights, and getting sufficient sleep are effective ways to combat stress. An anticancer mind is based on forming authentic relationships with others that allow us to feel confident in our deepest being.Mindfulness meditation also helps us to focus ourselves in the present moment. Daily practice of yoga, meditation, or Chi-Kungall employ breath as a means to find inner balance and peace.

When old wounds heal, the energy that went into burying the past is released and can be used to support life affirming functions. I can change the quality of my life by spending more of my time with people that I love and by making the most of every moment.

We all have the opportunity to live healthily. "Anticancer" is full of applicable ways to make lifestyle choices that are well researched and is an excellent starting place for anyone open to change and ready for action.
