Alexander bench b/wGreetings!

We launch the 2011-2012 academic year focused on the collision of law and religion. The increasingly volatile relationship of religious and political communities around the globe, particularly within the past decade, has made it imperative for diverse persons and peoples to learn to cooperate with each other -- lest they annihilate cherished traditions and cultures worldwide.

Our "When Law and Religion Meet Lecture Series" explores critical questions creating battles in courtrooms, legislatures, and places of worship: genetic cloning and other bio-medical advances, religious freedom in a diverse world, Islamic family law in the West, Jesus and the law of marriage and divorce, and same-sex marriage.

Mary Ann Glendon, Learned Hand Professor of Law at Harvard University and former U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican, headlines the series. She will tackle the challenges of the universal right to religious freedom in a world of diversity, Sept. 20, 7:30 p.m. at Emory University School of Law. Four distinguished Emory scholars complete the lineup, and details about them and their lecture topics are included in the article below.

Our Senior Fellows have been writing prolifically about these issues, and we're highlighting our newest and forthcoming volumes in a new publications catalog. If you'd like to receive a copy of this catalog in the mail, you may request one here.

As we chronicle our work at the Center, we'd like to know how to best keep you informed. Do you find this e-newsletter informative? Would you prefer to receive printed material in the mail? We've included a short readership survey in this issue; may we impose upon you to take five minutes to tell us what you think?

We hope to see you at one or more of our lectures, and we wish you a wonderful fall semester.

Sincerely,

OWN WORDS

Witte_100x100

"In the United States, the substantial weakening of the First Amendment has shifted many questions of religious liberty from the judiciary to the legislature, and from the federal to the state governments--often leaving religious liberty vulnerable to fleeting local politics and contingent upon a claimant's geographical location."
