Alexander, Witte Greetings!

Warm fall greetings from the Center for the Study of Law and Religion (CSLR) at Emory University. We embark on this academic year with a new website that makes our scholarship -- particularly our work in law, religion, and human rights -- more accessible to the public. This issue of our e-newsletter explains the site's features, and also highlights our new books and recent accomplishments of our senior fellows. We hope you enjoy this issue and will share it widely with your family, friends, and colleagues.

Sincerely,

Michael Broyde Broyde Awarded Grant to Study Missing Husbands & Jewish Law
CSLR Senior Fellow Michael J. Broyde has received a $30,000 grant to study the legal issues surrounding Jewish husbands who are missing as a result of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States, and whose apparent widows now wish to remarry. The Emory University Research Committee presented the award to Broyde to write a book about how 9/11 brought back the relevance of heter aguna, permission from a Jewish authority for a woman to remarry because it seems that her husband has died. Under Jewish law, women cannot remarry without a religious bill of divorce or proof that her husband is dead. READ MORE
