Welcome to UCSC Campus Sustainability Updates!

The Education, Communication, and Outreach for Sustainability (ECOS) Working Group and the Sustainability Office will be sending these out 1-3 times per quarter. These updates will:
  • Provide information to campus sustainability advocates about efforts, successes, and opportunities at UCSC.
  • Inform readers about initiatives at other UC's, California campuses, or the wider world of campus sustainability that relate to activities at UCSC.

UCSC has taken another step in increasing its sustainability by obtaining its first LEED certification--the internationally recognized "green" standard for buildings. More
STEPS Opportunity
The STEPS Institute at UCSC announces the 2009 Benjamin Hammett Award for Research on Climate Change. Graduate and Undergraduate proposals for research funds are due May 30, 2009. More

UCSC partners with NASA
UCSC, Foothill-De Anza Community College and NASA Ames Research Center partner to create a green research campus in Silicon Valley.  More

UCSC Climate Action Plan
The University of California, Santa Cruz has just completed its first draft of the Climate Action Plan. The UCSC Climate Action Plan outlines the current UCSC Greenhouse Gas Inventory and provides strategies to reduce emissions. Download the plan from the Sustainability Website.

City Water Restrictions
SC Stage 2 Water Shortage
The Santa Cruz City Council voted on April 28th to institute restrictions on water use beginning May 1. The City Council declared a "Stage 2-Water Shortage Warning," with the goal of reducing water use in its service area by 15 percent. The restrictions, following three consecutive years with less-than-normal rainfall, continue through October. More

UCR Unveils Sustainability Plan
UC Riverside unveiled a wide-ranging sustainability plan Monday that outlines hundreds of goals ranging from being waste-free by 2020 to replacing a water-hogging dining hall dishwasher.  More (1)(2)

UCSB scores $19M in stimulus money
UC Santa Barbara has landed $19 million in federal stimulus money for new energy research. The money came from the U.S. Department of Energy and aims to create jobs in addition to advancing technology.

UCI's Student Center earns LEED Gold certification
UC Irvines new Student Center has been awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. The 287,000-square-foot social hub at UCI is the state's first student center to receive LEED gold certification. More

UCI's Sustainable Transportation Programs Earn EPA Environmental Achievement Award

UC Irvines effort to reduce congestion and improve air quality through sustainable transportation programs was recognized Thursday, April 16, with an outstanding achievement award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. More
